Of Dutch extraction, born at Stone, Staffordshire, the son of an English physician, he lived in Lincoln, the home of his wife.
He studied art in London, and in 1809 entered the Academy schools. In 1812 he became a member of the Society of Painters in Watercolours, where he exhibited for many years, as well as at the Academy. He married in 1810 the sister of William Hilton RA. He died in London.
Apart from some early still lifes and studies of street scenes and and markets, nearly all de Wint's works are landscapes.
The reputation of de Wint, and the prices of his paintings, rose substantially after his death, becoming 'old masters' of the 19th century English watercolour.
His works are a pleasant contrast to the usual gaudy Victorian paintings.
Torksey Castle, Lincolnshire (c 1835) is a classic de Wint watercolour.
His pictures can be found in London in the Tate, National Gallery, the Victoria and Albert Museum and The Collection, an art-museum in Lincoln.
The most comprehensive collection of de Wint paintings is to be found in the Usher Gallery in Lincoln, now known as The Collection, since its amalgamation with the City and County Museum.
