A higher Google profile

We were approached to redesign an existing web site for a company already using our technical writing services. Their web site had been around for several years, and was getting a steady trickle of visitors.

Too far down the results lists

They were listed on the search engines, but for their key phrases, they appeared somewhere around 150 places down the list - far, far past where anyone doing a search would look.

A design ready to roll

They had asked a "Web Designer" to create a design for them, which he delivered in the form of a single graphic image: not a lot of use as a web site, but it was attractive enough, and reflected their existing marketing collateral.

We took this basic design, adapted it so that it would not be restricted to a fixed width browser window, and developed a web page layout that worked with all modern browsers, was attractive, readable and useable at different screen window sizes.

The content ready to use

When the client had approved the results, we used this as a template to rebuild the web site, mostly using the same content, with additions and updates from the client's sources, and some we wrote for them.

The design of the site was made not only with usability and attractiveness in mind, but also so that it would be indexed by search engines, thereby raising the site's profile.

We registered the site with the major search engines, and with a few of the specialist ones, and waited.

The result

It worked! Although for several weeks nothing much seemed to happen, after a couple of months the traffic began to increase, and gradually the site crept up the search engine rankings.

It is never a simple matter making a web site appear high in the rankings, but it is a matter of knowing the right things to do, and doing them. It takes patience and luck too, we have to admit!

The proof of the pudding...

We don't want you to take our word for it: try it yourself: search for the phrase "Documentation Specialists" on whichever is your favourite search engine: the chances are that our client's site (check for a tiny ‘A Hairydog Production’ link near the bottom left) will be in the top five results from every search engine, particularly if you search for UK web sites.

Or try searching on your favourite search engine for "website specialists" – chances are that Hairydog will be near the top of the list!
