Gerald Ponting -
writer, publisher, photographer, lecturer,
based in central southern England
My first foray into self-publishing was in 1976 - the first-ever guide-book to the Callanish Stones, which sold 13,000 copies over a period of seven years. Since my return to my native county of Hampshire in 1984, I have published various local history books and guide books. Some of these have been for ‘mainstream’ publishers, but most have been self-published under my imprint of MILLERS DALE PUBLICATIONS, or by CHARLEWOOD PRESS which is a partnership with Anthony Light.
I wrote The History of the Burgate School while employed as the School’s Archivist and it was published by the School in 1997.
My Landmark Visitor's Guide to the New Forest was published by Landmark in 2000.
Callanish and other Megalithic Sites of the Outer Hebrides was published in 2002 by Wooden Books.
I co-wrote other books on Callanish in the 1980s, which are now published by M and R Curtis.
Millers Dale Publications originally published only small booklets related to my slide shows. Now it has a list of several local history books including those which I have co-written with Barbara Burbridge and Barbara Hillier.
Anthony and Gerald have written other historical books which have been published by Phillimore and by European Library.
includes two books from Charlewood Press and two from Millers Dale Publications.
