Gil Scott-Heron
Black Wax

Available on DVD 27/1/02

Extras include ‘The Bottle’ & ‘Is That Jazz’

One of the most influential figures in rap music, Gil Scott-Heron’s aggressive, no-nonsense street poetry inspired a legion of intelligent rappers.

Directed by acclaimed documentary filmmaker Robert Mugge, Black Wax is a fascinating 79-minute portrait of Scott-Heron performing at the Wax Museum Nightclub D.C. in 1982 interspersed between scenes of him discussing political ironies as he wanders past national monuments and ghetto neighbourhoods in Washington.

Originally released in the US in 1983 and broadcast on Channel 4 in the same year, Black Wax received rave reviews:

“The footage of Gil Scott-Heron carrying a ghetto blaster and rapping along to his own verse was a stroke of pure genius” - The Face

DVD Extras – “Is That Jazz”, plus a contemporary interview with and performance ‘The Bottle’ by Gil in Jamaica at the Reggae Sunsplash Festival.

Robert Mugge is the king of the American music documentary."
