Ystradgynlais past and present

Page 2

I am showing some very old pictures of Ystradgynlais accompanied by pictures taken from as near as possible to the original spot so that we can see how much the village has changed, the originals were taken in the early 1900's and have been retouched a little here and there in an effort to make them more presentable, I will be using some one only pictures on this page also.

The first picture on this page shows a view down Brecon road past the Astoria picture house.

The first bldg on the right below the astoria was where Mrs Prosser lived and the lean to adjoining was Mundi Prosser's barber shop.

The Picture above is what we see today, the Barbers shop is now a greengrocer's shop and the barber's shop occupies the larger bldg next door. Between the cinema and the greengrocer shop we have Derwen Road going to the right and connecting to Heol Giedd at Teddy Bear Bridge,if one turns left after the bridge we will be back to where we started our little tour, and as I said earlier this road was known as Water st. From where I took this picture we also have a view over Ystalyfera and down the Swansea Valley.

My next picture is of Ystradgynlais Cross looking down to Heol Eglwys (Church Terrace) St Cynogs Church is on the left about 200 yards down the road, the Allt y Grug mountain above Ystalyfera can be seen in the background.

And now back to the old, and we look at what was before the Bypass arrived, and a look from the hump back bridge near the butcher's shop in Cwmgiedd.

Today we have the bypass to Ystradgynlais and also to the lovely place that we all new and loved. To walk along the canal bank and enjoy the peace and serenity of it all was a wonderfull experience. Today we have the road and the traffic lights, and the experience is really different,as you can see from the picture below.

I would like to thank Mr and Mrs Hayden James for Letting me use their old picture cards, Thanks also to Mrs Dilys James. If you enjoyed your short trip down memory lane and would like another, why not drop me a line and maybe we can have another go sometime.
