The Beatles' collection of chart-topping hits, aptly titled 1, lived up to its name, recapturing the number-one spot on the pop album sales charts.
By reclaiming the top slot, the Beatles, who broke up more than 30 years ago, exacted some revenge on the boy band du jour, the Backstreet Boys, whose Black & Blue knocked 1 from number one two weeks ago. For the week ended December 10, 1 outsold Black & Blue 670,000 copies to 546,000, according to SoundScan tallies. So far, the disc has sold more than 2.5 million in the U.S. and north of 13 million copies worldwide.
The Beatles are suddenly "Here, there and everywhere". Their Anthology book has been a fixture on the best-seller lists, there have been three recent Beatle-themed TV specials and their landmark film, "A Hard Day's Night", is back in theaters. Additionally, last Friday (8th December) was the 20th anniversary of John Lennon's assassination, which inevitably stirred even more interest in the Fab Four.
