Comments: Wonderful World of Wondermints
is a great collection of obscure pop covers and one great original. The
Wondermints are fantastic and have given me
hope that good pop music can still be made today. I also recommend their
other albums of original material also.
I bought Odds & Sods on vinyl years ago and I see that the
CD has even more tracks (like double!) on it that my American version
didn't have (Americans are notorious for making 2 shorter albums out
of one normal album and trying to make more profit). I had some of
those extra songs on bootleg vinyl (Who's Zoo). More rare stuff
makes even a better experience! I only really liked the Who during
their early days to the early 1970's, especially their live stuff and
this album typifies that sound for the most part. Real nice pop tunes
on this album that a lot of people haven't heard before.
A great album by a really cool guy who should be way more popular than
he is. Jason did all the instruments and vocals too. He was in
Jellyfish (one of my favorite bands) the Grays and the 3
o'clock also, all whose albums I recommend listening to.
Before they made 10+ minute musical excursions, Yes was a jazzy,
psychadelic, poppy English band. Their first albums are nice little classics
worth listening to. They even do a cool Beatles cover on their
eponymous album.
I don't know if this one is really a pop album, but it grooves in a film
noir way and it is usually addictive because of that. David Lynch made
a cool TV series and a wild movie prequal and the music is "lounge-pop"
at its finest. Fix yourself a dry martini before you listen to this one.
Esquivel
is (I think he's still alive and living in Mexico) a band leader whose
style was labeled "space age bachelor" because he used a lot
of stereophonic effects & wild vocalizations. He is definitely worth
checking out. I don't find a lot of his music on the internet though.
