Comments:
Big Star's #1 Record and Radio City define the genre. Maybe
their impact has been diminished somewhat in nearly 30 years, as almost
every powerpop band has paid homage. The Beatles - it's hard to
pick just one, but the double is so eclectic, it touches most bases for
me. The Raspberries is nigh on perfect. Skylarking was the
album they'd threaten to make their whole career, then with the Runt's
help - did. Sunflower sees the Beach Boys begin the 70's
- a period of artistic greatness, and commercail nadir. The Who
album is perhaps my favourite, although all are good up to Who's Next..
Notes on CD Releases:
Go on I'll admit, I've cheated! I have all my
selections on good old fashioned vinyl and sparkling reflective CD.
In doing this I can extend my 6 selections to nine
albums! Why? Because of CD repackging. Tthe first two Big Star
albums (Inseperable anyway) are only currently available as #1 Record
and Radio City together. Ditto, the Raspberries, available
as Side 3 and Starting Over and the Beach Boys Sunflower
often appears with Surf's Up - and the two albums together represent
their greatest work in the 70's.
