Frank Black - Teenager of the Year I will never tire of this album. It took a while to get into - my initial reaction was that Mr Black had lost it (he since produced another 4 albums, the most recent 'Dog in the Sand' is a masterpiece) Once it clicked, there was simply no turning back. Check out the unparalleled genius of Lyle Workman on lead guitar! I first started going out with a girl because she also had this record. We've been married 6 years - enough said.

World Party - Goodbye Jumbo
When you're living in a strange land and you don't speak the lingo and you don't have any money, all you've got is a Walkman and 3 tapes, make sure one of them is Goodbye Jumbo by World Party. That's how I got to know this album like the back of my hand (apart from the last 2 tracks, which didn't fit on the tape) Packed-full of great tunes and intelligent lyrics too.

XTC - Nonsuch Pure pop, it couldn't have happened without the Beatles but there's nothing derivative here. Pop music of the very highest calibre. I can't fault a single moment on this huge album. Beautifully produced as well. I've played it to death but it still sounds fresh.

Throwing Muses - The Real Ramona - Kristen Hersch at her very best. The first time I slapped this album on, my cat leapt onto the turntable and put a huge scratch from start to finish on side 1. This album's so good, it didn't stop me playing it non-stop for weeks.

High Llamas - Hawaii Exquisitely crafted songs on this lush, easy-listening epic of an album from Sean O'Hagan. More than a little Burt Bacharach meets The Beach Boys - nothing wrong with that. A very difficult choice between this one and Cold and Bouncy, which came out a couple of years later.

The Beatles - The Beatles I don't think there is anything I could possibly say about this album that hasn't been said, much more eloquently, by someone else already. I've been enjoying this album since I was 5 years old. There's something here for everybody. The most complete and diverse album ever!
