PROGRAMME FOR 2003

Don't forget that ALL THURSDAYS not shown below are still terrific fun - we always have wonderful local musicians playing a variety of styles, songs and music

23rd Jan THE CROW ROAD BAND (Jan Moncrieff, Phil McCready and Alan McLean) present the ALTERNATIVE BURNS NIGHT - an evening of Scottish music, traditional and modern, including a selection from the bard himself, with lots of choruses for you to join in with. Honorary Scot, Tony MacWootton, will address the haggis (meat and veggie), which will be served with the usual ‘chappit neeps an’ tatties’. Always great fun - and be prepared for the quiz . You never know, you might win it this time!
13th Feb JIM MCLEAN It has been some time since we’ve had Jim as our guest. He is a great songwriter, guitarist and singer and is a favourite at the club. His songs are always delivered in his unique, powerful style, keeping the audience entranced. Seats will be at a premium - get there early!
6th Mar THE SONS OF NAVARONE A return visit from the Belgian quartet (Eugene O’Brien being the only non-Belgian) who made such an impression on their first visit to the Windmill last summer. The band plays a range of stringed instruments superbly well and their music has influences from various sources. Bound to be another popular evening!
20th Mar KELLYS AYE - Felix and Kathy present an evening of Irish music in a ST PATRICK’S NIGHT PROGRAMME. There will be a mixture of modern and traditional songs and tunes with lots of chorus songs (words provided) to encourage maximum audience participation! This will be a fun evening. Bring along your singing voices and your wit!
24th Apr RICK CHRISTIAN is a highly regarded singer/songwriter and guitarist, based in Essex. At present he is very much involved in entertaining special needs children in hospitals. It’s good to welcome this talented musician to the Windmill again, after a gap of almost 3 years.
1st May ORRIN STAR is an award-winning guitar, banjo, mandolin and fiddle player. He is one of America’s finest exponents of the flat-picking style (US national flat-picking champion in 1976). His music spans the range bluegrass to country to folk. His visit is another coup for the Windmill!
22nd May BRAM TAYLOR is an entertaining artist with a distinctive voice and relaxed stage presence. He has gained his reputation as a fine vocalist and musician in folk clubs, concerts and festivals. His repertoire varies from traditional to contemporary British and American songs. This is his first, very welcome, visit to the Windmill.
12th Jun MIKE BAKER & RUSS HARRIS - right hand meets left hand! These fine local guitarists, have been delighting us with their music, separately and together, for many years. We are delighted that they have agreed to be our guests again.
20-22 Jun CAVERSHAM CHARITY FOLK FESTIVAL WEEKEND - It's that time again! Do help support some worthy local charities and enjoy listening to some great acts .... local and national names including Jez Lowe, Mike Silver, Phil Downes and Roy Bailey.
3rd Jul ANNUAL BBQ  held in the pub garden, followed by music in the club room as usual. Always a popular event. Numbers and payment for food are required in advance (at least 1 week before the event). Details of food choices and cost (subsidized to regulars) will be available later.
August We have no guests booked for August, but unlike many other clubs we do remain open. So, lots of chances for floor singers to participate!

4th  Sep Theme Evening - Sing Along Songs   It’s a long time since we’ve had a theme evening, and this is an easy one for performers. Dig out any songs you have with choruses and refrains and the audience will oblige by singing along.
25th  Sep Steve Kaufman   American exponent of the flat picking style of guitar playing, is again visiting the UK. After the wonderful reception he received on his last guest appearance, we just had to invite him back. If you missed him last September, make sure you are there this time!
9th  Oct The Tudor Lodge Charity Evening (in aid of Cancer Research)  Lynne Whiteland and John Stannard will be hosting a fun night with an Oscars theme, complete with gold envelopes and statuettes for the winners! They suggest ‘posh fancy dress’ for such an illustrious occasion (not compulsory!) - the glitzier the better! There will be an award for the best dress, as well as a selection of raffle prizes. The Windmill CD will be on sale - again, profits go to the charity.
30th Oct The Hot String Quintet   from Germany return to play their type of bluegrass music. Expect lots of familiar songs, in an unfamiliar style. Their music is infectious and they will have you tapping along in spite of yourselves!
20th  Nov The Wrong Sort of Biscuit  otherwise known as Dave Hunter and Claire Coxwell. Regulars to the club will know that Dave is an excellent guitarist and singer. His musical partner, Claire, is a ‘mean’ squeeze box player and she plays with a number of Barn Dance Bands. We don’t have this dynamic duo at the club often enough - this is your chance to hear them!
4th  Dec An evening featuring Chris Clarke Chris's folk-classical style of accompanying himself singing songs by mainly modern composers/ lyricists, has delighted audiences at the Windmill over many years. On this occasion Chris will have a half hour feature spot at the end of the evening. Be there! It might be your last chance for a long time to hear this talented musician!
18th  Dec Christmas party  Always a lovely evening. Lots of performers usually turn up, but we try to fit in everyone if we can. Food will be provided but a small contribution to the food table (finger food is most suitable) from our regulars would be appreciated. Songs with a Christmas theme are encouraged, but if you don’t know any, don’t let that stop you performing!

There will be no club during the following 2 weeks as the next 2 Thursdays are Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. So, see you all on 8 January 2004!!
