| PROGRAMME FOR 2019 |
January 11 Matthew Quilliam Tonight we are featuring a talented young man from Yateley. Matthew has performed several times at the club on open/singers evenings and he made a huge impression on everyone present. He plays the ukulele exceptionally well and will doubtless have everyone singing along to some old favourites. A great way to start off the New Year! February 8 The Hedge Inspectors Mike (aka Krabers) and Caroline Hayllor are accomplished musicians and they have played at the club previously, e.g. as part of Jim McLean's band, The Boars Bridge Collective. This is their first appearance as a guest duo. They play mainly ukuleles and much of their material is self written, quirky songs, which can have you crying one moment and roaring with laughter the next. March 8 Wildwood Jack Everyone enjoyed this duo when they paid their first visit to the club in 2017. Adam Piggott is a fine guitarist and Jayne Freeman accompanies him on ukulele and does most of the vocals. Their material varies from traditional to the Beatles (they do a brilliant version of Eleanor Rigby!). It's with great pleasure that we welcome them back to the club. April 12 Singers night This evening is almost certainly during the school holidays, so it could either be a very quiet or a very busy one! But, whichever it is, there are lots of chances for people to participate. So, whether you are an experienced performer, or nervous or don't play often, this might just be the chance for you to have a go. May 10 Charity Evening with Tudor Lodge Lynne (of Tudor Lodge) runs the Boars Bridge Festival, which over the years has raised significant financial support for the Reading Multiple Sclerosis Centre. This year Lynne is taking a break from running the Festival and so Poppy's is running a Charity Evening to raise money for the Therapy Centre. Tudor Lodge will perform an extended floor spot at the end of the evening. Please be generous when the collection box comes around. June 14 DUAL GUEST EVENING ANDY LAVERY is a relative newcomer to Poppy's. He is an experienced musician, playing both guitar and keyboard. He was a member of the very successful trio Scotch Measure, who performed at clubs and festivals around the country during the '80s STUART TESTER and MIKE BAKER are a popular local duo who have played at Poppy's, The Windmill and Boars Bridge Festival over the years, where their musicianship is always well appreciated. The guests will share the second half of the night and an evening of quality music is guaranteed! July 12 Singers/open evening We hope to fit in anyone who wants to sing. The last time we had a singers evening we had more people wanting to perform than we could fit on the programme, so it might be wise to let me know beforehand if you want to sing. AUGUST CLOSED September 13 200 Hurts This duo hails from the West Country. It is their first visit to the club. Alec is a multi-instrumentalist and superb guitarist. Jules (Julia) is the lead singer with a voice to command an audience. Both are song writers and their material is based on a range of musical styles and influences. They enjoy performing traditional songs, but sometimes rewritten to produce the unexpected! Come along. You won't be disappointed! October 11 The Inside Out Trio Our old friends, Martin and Chris Cook, formerly regular performers at the club, return for the evening with their trio. Martin and Chris play guitar and sing while Dave accompanies them on bass. Their material includes both self written songs and some excellent covers. It will be lovely to see the trio back again in Hampshire! November 8 North Drive Trio When North Drive played recently at the Windmill Club in Fleet we immediately decided we must have them as guests at Poppy's. They perform a wide range of musical styles, from bluegrass to the more traditional. Whatever your musical tastes, you will find much to enjoy from the performance of this band. December 13 Christmas party This is always a fun evening. Some performers include seasonal songs, but it is not compulsory. There is no guest and as far as possible we try to fit in everyone who wants to perform. A small contribution to the food table is welcome. 2018 Programme 2020 Programme |
