RNAS Yeovilton International Air Day
Saturday 5th July 2008
The theme for RNAS Yeovilton International Air Day 2008, which takes place on Saturday 5th July, is ‘Maritime Air’. The roles of the Royal Navy in the 21st century include protection of sea lanes, intelligence gathering, counter narcotics, delivering humanitarian aid, peacekeeping and, ultimately, war-fighting. Fast approaching the 100th anniversary of the birth of Naval Aviation, in 1909, the Fleet Air Arm remains at the forefront of this effort. Yeovilton based Commando Sea King and Lynx helicopters and Maritime Lynx Squadrons will feature in the extensive flying and static display along with visiting military and civilian aircraft, historic and modern from around the world.
The 5 hour flying display will feature many Yeovilton based Commando Sea King and Lynx helicopters and other Maritime Squadrons in the extensive flying programme. Fast jets from around the world as well as the RAF’s latest combat aircraft, Typhoon, will also be appearing whilst the Royal Navy Historic Flight and the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight will provide something rather quieter but just as impressive as we reflect upon our nation’s remarkable aviation heritage. The finale to the show will be the traditional Commando Assault Demonstration, incorporating the RAF and Army.
An American Boeing C-17 Globemaster III will be making a rare appearance at Air Day, where it will form an imposing and majestic feature of this year’s Static Display. The Royal Jordanian Falcons are set to take part in the 5 hour display along with the Kennet Aviation's Seafire, a Sea Fury T20, and De Havilland Aviation's Sea Vixen, Vampire & Gnat. A Royal Navy Sea Harrier GR9 will take part in the Commando Assault Finale.
Ground attractions include the one of the world’s largest aviation museums containing the largest collection of Naval aircraft in Europe, ‘Flight Deck’ audio visual presentation recreating a working aircraft carrier, and Concorde (G-BSST) prototype. Other attractions include a funfair, simulators, inflatables, bungee trampolines, stalls, and refreshments. There will be arena displays of the Royal Marines band, Royal Marines Commando Display, and HMS Heron Brickwood Field Gun Display. A vehicle Exhibition with of over 200 vehicles including Classic/Vintage cars and motorbikes as well as army vehicles. You can also enjoy the spectacular views of RNAS Yeovilton and surrounding areas in one of the helicopter pleasure flights.
