RAF Waddington International Air Show 2008
Saturday 5th & Sunday 6th July 2008
Royal Air Force Station Waddington in Lincolnshire, the county that is considered by many to be the traditional heartland and spiritual home of the Royal Air Force, has been host since 1995 to the RAF's biggest air show. It has a well-earned reputation for appealing to enthusiasts and families alike, and is considered to be one of the UK's top military air shows.
Background
RAF Waddington is a fully operational unit of No 2 Group within RAF Air Command and is home to No 34 Expeditionary Air Wing comprising the RAF's airborne Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance (ISTAR) aircraft. Four resident squadrons, Nos 8, 23, 51 and 54(R) Squadrons operate the Boeing E-3D Sentry and Nimrod R1 aircraft in these roles. The Sentry aircraft of Nos 8, 23 and 54(R) Squadrons also constitute the UK Component of the NATO Airborne Early Warning Force. The newly re-formed 5(AC) Sqn, which recently received its first Sentinel R1 aircraft, will pick up its historic "army co-operation" mantle and operate in the ASTOR (Airborne Stand-Off Radar) role.
The Airshow
Sponsored by the Air Force Board of the Defence Council, the Waddington International Air Show is the largest of the RAF's official air shows. The venue has acquired a hard-earned reputation amongst visiting pilots and aircrew for its excellent hospitality, and is consequently always very well supported by aircraft from around the western world - many not often seen in the UK.
The 6-hour flying display has a truly international flavour and is expected to include at least 1 top national display team. The static aircraft display will feature up to 100 military and civilian aircraft in 3 separate parks.
Tickets
Tickets for adults are £16 in advance or £20 on the day - children are £7 in advance or £10 on the day. Under 5s are free.
