KIRUNA & JUKKASJARVI
or 200 ABOVE and20 BELOW

Kiruna is a medium sized town 200 km north of the Arctic circle.
Kiruna is also an iron mine and the iron mine is Kiruna.
(We managed to fit in a visit just before we flew down to
Stockholm to meet up with Alex and Sue.)
The economy has expanded significantly since the first
ICE HOTEL was built 10 years ago at Jukkasjarvi,
the main reason for our visit.

The Hotel is rebuilt every year, by spraying arteficial snow
over a removable arched former. Everything inside is
made of ice; seats, chairs, beds, drinking glasses. The beds
do have a 3" foam mattress and a few reindeer hides,
and the hotel provides sleeping bags. Even so, when it is
-20 C outside, it is a balmy -5 C in the bedrooms!

First impression is one of statues everywhere, all carved out of ice blocks which are cut out of the frozen river. Ice is also exported all over the world.

We stayed one night in the Ice Hotel and then stayed in the cabin in the back ground, which was much warmer.

The hotel runs ice sculpture courses but we were too late to enroll for an afternoon session.
