I am sorry that I do not have more time to help people with their queries, whether they are about starting their family history or more detailed questions. If I have sent you this file then it is because I cannot quickly answer your question. I hope that you will find some of these sites useful.
Most of the suggestions come from a very good booklet by Stuart A Raymond called
Family History on the Web - an internet directory for England & Wales
(I have no business connection with Mr Raymond, btw)

The sites fall into several categories:

A. Sites with huge lists of other sites
Such as
1. Cyndi's List at http://www.CyndisList.com with 40000 sites to choose from.
2. UK & Ireland Genealogy at http://www.genuki.org.uk which has thousands of pages
3. British Isles Genealogy at http://www.genealogy.about.com/hobbies/genealogy/msubuk.htm

You need to have some idea of what you are looking for, to use these sites

If any of these links do not work for any reason - try searching for the few words of description preceeding each link - I use GOOGLE at http://www.google.com

B. Sites for Beginners at genealogy

1. Federation of Family History Societies at http://www.ffhs.uk/leaflets/faq.htm
2. UK & Ireland Genealogy site at http://www.cs.ncl.ac.uk/genuki/faq.html
3. Researching from abroad at http://www.genuki.org.uk/ab/
4. Getting started in Family History at http://www.genuki.org.uk/gs/
5. Join your local Family History Society. See http://www.ffhs.org.uk/

C. Resource Centres in UK

1. Public Record Office at http://www.pro.gov.uk
2. Genuki's index to the PRO at http://www.genuki.org.uk/indexes/PRO/Contents.html
3. Latter Day Saints Family History Centres at http://www.lds.org.uk/genealogy/index.htm

D. County Record Offices and other Libraries and Archives

Use GOOGLE to search for the sites - eg use the County Name or Town and combinations of "Record  Office"  Archive  "Local History"  "Local Studies" http://www.google.com

E. County Information on the Internet

There are three organisations which will usually have a site with some information about the county. These are Genuki, Genweb and UKGenealogy.
Use GOOGLE to search for one of these three and the county name. http://www.google.com

F. Finding Names or People  on the Internet

1. Genuki has list of names for each county http://www.cs.ncl.ac.uk/genuki/SurnamesList
(this does not mean that every name is listed or every person!!)
2. Finding People - try http://www.CyndisList.com/finding.htm
3. Most Family History Societies have a list of names being researched by their members but the areas of search could be in other counties. Use GOOGLE to search for the County name with "Surname List"http://www.google.com

G. Researchers

1. Employing a researcher - http://www.sog.org.uk/leaflets/researcher.html
2. Professional researchers - http://www.agra.org.uk
