DEAN GARRAGHTY SOFTWARE

ATARI 8-BIT (800/XL/XE) PUBLIC DOMAIN
SOFTWARE CD-ROM CATALOGUE & USAGE NOTES

Last updated: 28 August 2004

Introduction
The Public Domain software listed here has been collected from around the world, and quite a bit of it has been written by me and other users in the UK. Any disks using sampled music/sounds/speech, do not need any special hardware to run. They run under software control.

NOTE: We are not responsible in any way for any of the programs contained on any of the disks in our library. We cannot guarantee that any particular disk is useful for the task you had in mind. Also, we cannot answer questions relating to the use of any of these disks. It is your responsibility to work out how to use the software. This is basically what P.D and Shareware is all about. If it doesn't work, fix it!! If you don't like it, modify it! Also note that some software may require a separate payment to the author if found useful.
Disk densities
Disk densities used in the descriptions are as follows:

S - Single density. Works on any drive from the 810 upwards
M - Medium density. Works on any drive from the 1050 upwards
D - Double density. Requires a US Doubler, Happy, Speedy, etc. 180K modified drive.
Filenames
All ATR (in the ATR directory)/DCM (in the DCM directory) files are named in the following way:

PDxx_yy where xx is the disk number shown in this catalogue, and yy is the side number (example: PD7_1 and PD7_2). Single sided disks are just PDxx (example: PD1). Any multiple disk packs are named PDxx_Dz_yy where xx is the catalogue disk number, z is the disk number, and yy is the side number (example: PD125_D2_1).
Using this CD
The disks on this CD are provided in both .ATR and .DCM file format. .ATR will work in most PC Atari emulators, along with such products as APE/PROSystem (Atarimax). .DCM files are compressed Atari disk images. These can be copied over to the Atari (this requires extra hardware/software such as a 180K Atari drive and a 5.25" drive in your PC) and made back into Atari disks using the product 'disk communicator', which is included on this CD, as is the UTIL PC utility to read and write to 180K MyDOS disks. MyDOS 4.5 is also on this CD.

The 'AtariPDExtra' folder contains:

MyDOS 4.5 - (2 double-sided disks called MYDOS_D1_1, MYDOS_D1_2, MYDOS_D2_1, MYDOS_D2_2). Boot MYDOS_D1_1 for the main program. MyDOS will allow you to create 180K disks if you have a modified drive capable of doing this (Happy drive, etc.).

Diskcomm3 - the Atari program required to turn .DCM files back into full Atari disks. This is supplied as both an .ATR file (full disk) and just an Atari executable file. The executable file has been supplied separately so that you will be able to copy just the executable on to your 180K disk and run it straight off that once you have your 180K disk back in your Atari drive. The .DCM files can also be copied on to your 180K disk.

UTIL - this is a PC application to read and write to MyDOS 180K disks. It runs in DOS, but should work in Windows. There are no detailed instructions for this, so just run it without any switches to see a list of valid switches and what they do. Please note that UTIL requires you to have a 5.25" disk drive on your PC which should preferably be a 360K drive rather than a 1.2M drive. In a 1.2M drive it becomes a very hit-and-miss affair, which may end up driving you mad! It is often better to format the 180K disk using UTIL (UTIL /I x: where x is the drive letter of your 5.25" drive) rather than MyDOS on your Atari.

The process of moving files over from/to a PC is a subject in itself. There are a number of ways of doing this (APE/PROSystem is the best), and much has been written on how to do this. Please don't ask us for detailed information regarding this! There's lots of info on the Internet.
Information Accuracy
The information in this document is as accurate as possible, but may not be fully accurate. In particular, if a disk doesn't boot with Basic, try it without and vice versa. As much information as possible has been given about each disk, including contents, boot instructions, and any special operating instructions. However, we have had to rely on old notes and disk labels to provide most of this information, and some of these were incomplete.

If you find any errors, in particular in the boot or operational instructions, then please let us know. We will keep this file updated and post it on our website so that others can have access to the latest version.
Missing disk numbers
You will notice that some disk numbers aren't used, and appear to be missing. This is because some disks had to be withdrawn for legal or technical reasons over the years.
NTSC/PAL Issues
Most of the disks will run fine on both PAL and NTSC machines. However, some of the new European demos will not run on NTSC machines. There are a few disks that won't run properly on PAL machines. It would be best to try them in an emulator first before transferring over to a real Atari.
Copyright
Public Domain disks are generally copyright free. Shareware disks are generally not, but may be distributed free-of-charge.

Copyright exists in this catalogue file, and may not be distributed. (c) 1988-2004 DGS.

Title: Stereo music/Digi demo
Info: PD156 - Stereo music/Digi demo. Side 1 of this disk is very unique. It plays stereo music but using 2 computers. Not only that, but it uses digitized drums and graphics like Das Omen does. You don't HAVE to have two computers. You can enjoy this demo on just one. Side 1 contains Perestroyka and Sky-Network. In total you get 15 tunes. The instructions on the screen are in Polish, so here's what to do. Load the same program on both computers. Use one for the left channel, and one for the right. Use the SHIFT key and a number from 1-5 on Pere. and 1-0 on Sky-Network. This gets you the left channel. Then, on the other computer, use just the numbers on there own for the right channel. Hold the keys down and release them together at the same time. The music will start playing. Side 2 contains "Your Body My Body" a brilliant digi demo. Also included are two other demos. All this works on anything from an 800XL upwards! Note: a couple of bad words on the scroll lines. Not recommended for children.

Info: CardStax is an Atari 8-bit version of the Apple Mac's HyperCard hypertext system. Trying to tell you what hypertext is all about would take forever, but basically it allows you to create "cards" which can contain text, graphics, and music. These cards can then be linked together via "links" to other cards. These links are activated by interaction from the user via joystick, mouse, or touch tablet. You can create such things as interactive manuals, or help systems, or even expert systems! Lots of fun! Side 2 contains a game called Kalah which is basically Awari.
