Botchergate was, and still is, one of Carlisle's main thoroughfares. According to the 1851 Census of Carlisle there were 1176 people living in 227 households. The street included a workhouse.
All the material from the census has been reproduced in the database except the final column disabilty, as there were so few recorded in that category.
As a database, a tremendous amount of searching and sorting is possible, although there have been some guesses made in some cases. As usual the enumerator's writing was not all that clear in places.
There were of course all walks of like recorded in the census. An on-going project is to compile a database of C19th institutions including prisons and workhouses. The Botchergate example contains a workhouse (see above).
