For this exercise a short sample of four Directories follows. Each contains fifty records in five fields.
All these extracts are from lengthy databases and do not fully show off their true potential .
The following Directories have been used to obtain information exclusively about Carlisle :
1790 Universal British Directory 1790.htm
1811 Jollies Directory 1811.htm
1829 Parson & White Directory 1829.htm
1847 Mannix & Whellan Directory 1847.htm
For the technically minded, the material has been placed in a series of Microsoft Works for Windows database files. A five field Database was used, the fields are :
1) Number (for referencing)
2) Surname
3) Christian name
4) Occupation
5) Place of business or Residence
Data has been entered in the order that it appeared in the directory, but it can be printed out in a variety of ways :
a) Alphabetical order
b) Occupation
c) Street order
d) Women in the order that they appeared in the directory :
Notes
i) Women are designated by a . (full stop) after the surname. Only fully written out
female names have been given this designation, there are obviously some initials
which might indicate females, but these have not been designated female in this
database.
ii) Most addresses are those of business premises, no home addresses have been
included, a few were indicated by the symbol (h) in the original directory.
iii) As far as possible the Directory has been copied out faithfully, although there are
some slight changes especially to place names in order to clarify them wherever
possible. Usually this involves writing in full names such as lane or court .
A lengthy excerpt from the 1790 Universal British Directory is included to give the
reader a feel for the kind of material compiled in the introduction/ History section of
the Directory. Obviously, this section becomes more sophisticated as more
institutions and a wider range of issues are covered.
