Q: When should I apply for the theory/hazard perception test?

A: Ideally you should begin studying the theory and practicing mock hazard perception tests either before or in parallel with your course of driving tuition. Discuss and agree the timing with your instructor. Remember that your theory test "pass" is only valid for 2 years after the date you pass.

Q: How do I apply for the theory test?

A: You can apply in one of three ways:-.

1. by phone, (probably the easiest) on 0870-0101-372 (You will need to use a credit or debit card as payment).
2. using Internet checking out http://www.driving-tests.co.uk/
3. by post, using a form obtainable from your ADI instructor, a theory test centre or a practical driving test centre.

NB: You cannot book your test using someone else's credit/switch card number unless they are present at the time of booking and give you permission.

 Q: Where will the test be held?

A: There are approximately 150 theory test centres throughout the UK. The nearest ones for DELTA customers are in Uxbridge and Watford.

You can decide for yourself where to take the test, but it would make sense to take it at a centre near where you live or work. The test can usually be taken on weekdays (inc. weekday evenings), and at weekends.

Q: How long must I wait for the test results?

A: Now that the theory test is computer based, results are immediate.

Q: How long must I wait for a test appointment?

A: This varies, but is typically several weeks. On the run-up to the introduction of the HPT (14/11/02) this waiting time has been seen to increase to many weeks in some cases as students rush to get in before the new test is introduced.

Q: What if I don't speak English?

A: Tests are said to be available in the following languages:- English, Gujurati, Hindi, Punjabi, Chinese, Welsh, Bengali and Urdu. You can bring along a translator but they must be approved by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA).

Q: What if I have trouble reading, or have learning difficulties?

A: You may be entitled to extra time to complete the paper, and it is thought it may be possible for a member of staff to read the questions to you. You must make your needs known to staff at the time of booking on 0870-0101-372.

Q: What documentation must I take with me?

A: If you have a modern driving licence with a photograph, you must take both the paper and the photo licence along with you plus your booking letter.

If you have the older style licence without a photograph, you must take along an appropriate form of photographic evidence (such as a signed passport) plus your provisional licence and your booking letter.

Q: How much does it cost?

A: The theory test costs £18.

Q: What happens if I fail?

A: You must wait a minimum of 3 days before re-applying to take the test again.

Q: How long does the test last?

A: You will be given 40 minutes to complete the theory test, plus a warm-up period beforehand where you can practice on dummy questions. The Hazard Perception Test (HPT) lasts about 20 minutes on top of this time making a total session time of 1 hour.

Q: What is the pass mark?

A: At present, candidates must achieve at least 30 correct answers to pass the theory test. This can only be done by careful preparation and hard study beforehand. Ask your DELTA instructor for advice on books, etc.
