The local landmark known as the Chinese garage was first opened in 1929, built in Eastern style. The reason for the design is a mystery, publicity, an interest in Eastern culture, or even a Daily Express competition for the most original filling station, are all put forward as possible explanations. Originally the standard of service was very high with all attendants dressed in plum-coloured chauffeurs uniforms.
