Beckenham Place park is now formally renamed as Lewisham
Country Park although this is generally ignored by us locals. This is my
favourite park in the area, it is relatively unspoiled and is very quiet and
tranquil, pleasant for walks and cycle rides. Place Park is a large
park with extensive woodlands forming part of the South East of London's "Green
Chain". The Green Chain walk extends to a 15 mile route through the park from
Beckenham ending at Thamesmead. Also found within the park is an 18 hole public
golf course with putting green, tennis court facilities and sports and
recreation grounds. Beckenham Place Park is located in Beckenham Hill Road,
Beckenham.
The Park is a notable wildlife site and includes the most
extensive ancient woodlands in Lewisham, the most diverse acid grassland, the
most natural stretch of river, probably the oldest pond and the only willow
carr. Some of the parkland trees are also extremely old, pre-dating the
landscaping of the park.
The park originated from Beckenham Place a
mansion and estate built by John Cator (1728-1806) who purchased the Lordship
of the Manor of Beckenham in 1773, and rapidly built up a very large estate of
properties, mainly farms, both inside and outside the parish. The mansion still
exists at the centre of the park and part is used as the golf course club
house.
