Kelsey Park was originally formed from the grounds of
Kelsey Manor estate, which was once part of the towns most extravagant mansion.
The Thorntons proprietors of the Beckenham journal, were instrumental in
persuading the local council that the Kelsey estate should be bought for use as
a public park and it was due to their efforts that this was successful and the
park opened in 1913.
Kelsey Park is the showpiece of the borough,
offering a landscaped oasis of peace and quiet, although it is always popular
and usually crowded on summer Sundays. It is famous for its woodland and lakes
with Swans, Canada Geese and other wildfowl. The park also provides a home for
other wildlife including badgers, foxes and a lot of very tame squirrels.
There are other facilities for all the family including an enclosed
children's play area, tennis courts, a putting green and a park shop serving
snacks and drinks. There are well maintained flower displays at the main
entrance and at key locations around the park, these are supplemented by
flowering shrubs around the lakes especially in spring.
