Adult Volunteers

The Air Training Corps is staffed by adult volunteers who are essential to the running of every squadron and the corps as a whole.

Warrant Officers This is an appointment by the Air Training Corps rather than the Royal Air Force although within the Air Force itself Adult warrent Officers from the Air Training Corps get treated with as much respect as their regular counterparts. Squadron Warrant Officers are traditionally in charge of discipline matters as well as assisting with the teaching of subjects and project work. Warrant Officers also perform an important role as a liason between the NCOs and the Officers, and eliminate most problems that may arise on the day to day running of the squadron.

Comissioned Officers In the Air Training Corps the Officers hold actual Royal Air Force Comissions but appended with the subtitle of Volunteer Reserve Training, so as to distinguish them as members of the Air Training Corps. Officers are usually attached to squadrons by a decision made at Wing level although it is not unusual for Officers to come from the same town or area as their squadron. The RAF VR(T) hierachy is exactly the same as that of the regular Air Force although in the Cadet services the ranks tend to have a distinct job attached to them. These are (usually):
  • Pilot Officer (Junior Support officer)
  • Flying Officer (Squadron Adjutant)
  • Flight Lieutenant (Squadron Commander)

  • Above this and the Ranks tend to be purely organisational with the exception of REALLY large Squadrons who will have a Squadron leader as the CO.

But normally these roles are away from the day to day running of a squadron and more with long term planning and control of wider matters. These are:
  • Squadron Leader
  • Wing Commander
  • Group Captain
  • Air Commodore

  • If you are over 21 years of age and would like to lend a hand then we would like to hear from you. There are two ways that you can help your local squadron; as either a:

  • A Civilian Instructor.
    or
  • A Member of the Civilian Committee.

Civilian Instructors (known as CI's) are volunteers who attend squadron parade evenings to help organise and instruct cadets. Of special interest to us are people who have served in the Armed Forces or previouslly as a Cadet and are able to pass on their knowledge to the next generation of Cadets. Having said that, volunteers from any walk of life who are wiiling and prepared to spend some of their time to help out will be greatly welcomed.

Civilian Committee Committee meeting happen once a month. The Civilian Committee is made up of members of the Squadron's local community and acts as a 'go between' for the squadron and the local community. As well as this it provides vital functions to the squadron such as fund raising, looking after cadet welfare and constantly coming up with ways in which the squadron can make itself better in many ways.

If you think that you could help in either of these roles then we would be delighted to hear from you (See Contact Information page).
