Trainer

Before we were going to be allowed to spend any money on a real radio controlled plane, the condition was set that the cadets would have to train up on a simulator.

So in mid 2003 the squadron bought a "Gamebird Flight Simulator" for use with the Sqn computer as a trainer.

The Gamebird RC Pilot came with a controller that plugs into the computer and gives two, 2 channel, joysticks. Each with a resolution of 256 steps per axis.

This simulates all the real controls of a basic RC aeroplane and allows the cadets to learn with a precision and sensitivity very near the real thing.

Along with this controller came a copy of the EasyFly software.

This is a realistic and simple-to-use modelflight-simulator, that helps the cadets to learn to fly a R/C-model-airplane without having to damage a real one.

At least that was the theory behind it!

Early in 2004 the Sqn finally purchased it's first radio controlled plane.

A Multiplex Twinstar.

This is a basic twin engined trainer, made mainly from compressed polystyrene foam.

An early decision was also made that it would be a proper 4 chanel model.

Meaning control of Alerions, rudder, throttle and elevator.

But in order to "Future Proof" the equipment as much as possible so that it can be used in future models a Futaba 6 Channel controller was bought

As they would be the ones flying it, {and most probablly fixing it after crashes! CO.} it was decided that the cadets would do all of the construction.

Shown here are the final stages of wing assembly when the CO pointed out to the S/NCO IC that one of the wing spar reinforcements had just be epoxied in the wrong way up!

Pictures of it air worthness trials will be put up here as soon as we get them.
