Peaked caps are commonly worn by Standard Bearers and members of Air Cadet's bands instead of berets. But upon the Commanding officers discretion they can also be worn on Sqn by Cadet Warrant Officers (CWO’s).

When you go away on annual camp it is upto the Station Commander & Station Warrant Officers discretion wether or not to allow CWOs to wear their peaks on station.
If they say no, then they MUST wear berets instead.

So a note of warning to all CWOs out there, when you go on camp take you beret as well! otherwise you normally end up with a badly fitting and often manky spare beret.

Maintaining your peaked cap

  • Polishing
All you need to clean the peak is standard furntiure polish and a good lint free cloth. Using a yellow duster can be a bad decision as you will get yellow bits of fluff all over the base of the peak.

  • Cleaning
To clean the material, use sticky tape wrapped around your fingers (sticky side out of course) and gently roll your hand over the material to pick up any dirt or fluff.

  • Slashing
This refers to the cutting of the stitching at the base of the peak so that it can lowered in front of the face so that it is almost vertical!
This makes NCOs look imposing, but if you were issued with you cap, then this effectively amounts to vandalising service property and even if you purchased the cap yourself you still have to adhere to the rules and regulations laid down and will normally get into trouble.

ALWAYS double check with the Sqn Warrant Officer before making any 'alterations' to your uniform, and you may find that some staff are more "accomodating" than others.
