You're going Adventrure Training!    Great!    But without proper planning things could go badly wrong.

A good exercise & route plan is an essential for any good Adventure Training exercise. Before you start you will need to consider things like:

  • Where are you going?
  • Why are you going there?
  • How many people are in the group?
  • What is the experience level of the group?
  • When are you going? as the time of year may affect you.
  • How long are you going for?

Once you know all of that you can start to plan your route.
You will need to get hold of an Ordanance Survey map of the local area, normally in 1:50,000 scale, but 1:25,000 are becoming more popular although their coverage is still limited. Then you can decide the following:

  • Decide on the Start Location
  • Determine the End location
  • Add in any waypoints that you must go through.
i.e. The runied church you are visiting, or the location of your overnight camp site
  • You will then need to break the journey up into manageable legs.

Now you can start to fill out a route card with this information.
A Route card lists exactly where you will be and when, as well as emergency routes and other information that will be of use.

An Example route card {as used by the Duke of Eninburghs award} can be found Here

At least one copy of this is left behind with somebody when you go out, so in case the worst does happen the rescue teams will know exactly where you "should" have been.
