Before the war, William Aubrey Santer was a confectioner's assistant in Battle. He married Ann Bean in Battle in the summer of 1909, and the couple had a son in 1909, and a daughter two years later. His wife died in 1914, but despite having two young children, he still went to fight. He enlisted as Pte. G/12141 in the 9th Bn Royal Sussex Regiment. His daughter died in 1917. He lost his life on 21 March 1918, one of over 14,000 killed on the Somme between March and August 1918 and he is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial.
