Stanley Rees
Birth: | ca Nov 1895, Maenclochog , Pembrokeshire. |
Father: | George REES (ca 1864 - ? ) |
Mother: | Phoebe BEVAN (ca 1862 - ? ) |
Spouse: | Unmarried |
Death: | 22 Aug 1916, France |
Little is known of his early life. Had the war not intervened, it is likely that, like his younger brother, Ensor, he would have followed his father as a butcher. The Pembroke County Guardian reported his death in the editions of 15th & 22nd September 1916.
A MAENCLOCHOG YOUNG MAN, Private Stanley Rees, son of Mr. and Mrs. Rees,
Spring Villa, Maenclochog, has fallen on the field of battle. He was wounded
somewhere in France on the 2nd of August last, and died in hospital on the
22nd.
He came through the Gallipoli campaign without a scratch, and was the first
of the Maenclochog boys to appear on the "Roll of Honour." On
Sunday evening last a memorial service was held at the Old Chapel, where the
deceased worshipped from his childhood. There was a very large congregation,
the services at the neighbouring chapel being postponed. The Rev. R.
Williams,, pastor officiated, and preached a very impressive sermon from Luke
17-42.
Special hymns were sung, and the service throughout was very solemn.
The greatest sympathy is felt for Mr. and Mrs. Rees and the family in this
dark hour.
PRIVATE STANLEY REES,
of Maenclochog,
Son of Mr. and Mrs. Rees. Spring Villa, Maenclochog, who, as reported in our
last issue, died on August 22 from wounds received in France on Aug. 2nd.
Private Rees was a good type of the virile young manhood of the British
Empire. He was with the Pembrokeshire Yeomanry at the outbreak of war, but
growing tired of inactivity, obtained a transfer to the S.W.B., in which
Regiment he went through the terrible Gallipoli fighting, where he was buried
by a German shell. After spending some time in Egypt and Salonica he was down
with rheumatic fever, and was moved into hospital at Malta. He recovered from
this, spent a little time in England and was then moved to France, where he
had been for three months before meeting his end. His other brother [Ensor
Rees] is in the A.S.C.
