Little is known about this Robert Gilbourne. His discharge papers from the Sherwood Foresters were noticed in PRO series WO22 when looking for his brother's record. He served in the Boer War in 4th Battalion Derbyshire Regiment from 16 Jun 1897 to 30 Apr 1901, when he was discharged at Woolwich as medically unfit for further service. No details of what caused him to be unfit were given, it was apparently not a result of any military injury.
He subsequently had four children with his first wife, and a further five with Nellie Kayton. One child with each wife was named Robert, but both died before adulthood.
