No detailed search has been made into the life of James Wilkinson, but this article is reprinted from the Eastwood and Kimberley Advertiser of 24 March 1916. It is included here as he is a grandson of Joseph Reeve.
Corpl. A[rthur]. Wilkinson, aged 20, enlisted in the K.L.R. in September 1914, and
was transferred to the cycle corps and drafted to France September, 1915.
Is now doing duty as a despatch rider. Corpl. Wilkinson is not very well known
in Kimberley, having lived since childhood with his uncle and aunt at Swineshead
Lincs., at which place he is well known and highly respected.
Pte. Jim Wilkinson, aged 18, enlisted early in May 1915, in the 2nd Leicesters,
and after five months training was drafted to France, and thence to Egypt, and
finally to the Persian Gulf, where he has been through some fierce fighting.
Writing home to his parents, he says he is in the pink, although having had
two very narrow escapes, bullets having gone through his helmet and another
bullet taking his boot toe off. But he is still smiling. Only sons of
Mr. and Mrs. G. Wilkinson, 70 Noel-street, Kimberley, and grandsons of Mr. Jos.
Reeve
Trooper E. Triggs, S.N.H., enlisted January 1915, and was drafted to Egypt last
April. At the time of enlisting, Trooper Triggs was employed at Messrs. Hansons',
and with Pte. F. Gold lived with Mr. and Mrs. Wilkinson, 70, Noel-street, Kimberley.
Pte. F. Gold, 2nd Sherwood Foresters, of Noel-street, Kimberley, enlisted August
6th, 1914, and was drafted to France December, 1914. Pte. F. Gold was
wounded in a bayonet charge at Neuve Chapelle, March, 1915; back in the trenches
in may 1915, where he is still doing his bit. At the time of enlisting Pte.
Gold was a porter on the G.N.R. station at Kimberley.
