Dan
is one of only three Gilbourne yet found who served in the Royal Navy. He was
killed while serving as a stoker 1st class on HMS Charybdis in 1943, the only
Gilbourne known to have died in the Second World War. The British
were hunting the German ship Munsterland when they were attacked by E-boats
escorting her and the Charybdis sank after being hit by two torpedoes. HMS Limbourne
was lost in the same action, and the loss of life from the two ships was over
500 men. The account of the action is well documented, probably the best
being an excellent site
which contains several first hand accounts of the action.
This family lived in Brinsley, Notts, His brother served in the army in India
in WWII.
