The Will of John Gilborne 1602

In the name of god Amen the twentieth daie of March
in the yere of our lord god in Anno Di one thousand and six hundred and in the
three and fortie yere of the raigne of our sovereign Ladie Elizabeth by the grace of
god Queen of England, ffrance and Ireland defender of the faith witnesseth that I
John Gilborne citizen and draper of London, being whole of bodie and of good and ?perfe[ct]?
mind and memorie, laude and praise be given to almightie god therefore, do make ordain
and declare this my ???? testament, concering? this? my last will, in manner and forme
following, that is to saie, ffirst and principallie I bequeath my soul unto almightie god
my maker and creator, and to his dearlie beloved son Jesus Christ my onelie savior and
Redemer, in whom and by the me???? Of whose most precious death and passion I hope and
steadfastlie believe to have and obtain full and ?clear? remission and pardon and forgiveness
of all my sinnes and offences, And my bodie to the earth to be buried within the parish church
of Saint Swythines in London, where I am now a parishioner, in some convenient place in the
same parish church, at the discretion and appointment of my executors hereinafter named. [N.B. St. Swithins was destroyed in the Great Fire of London]. Item I
will that all such debts and somme and sommes of money whatsoever, as I shalbe indebted in, or
owe of right or in conscience to aine person or persons shalbe well and truth answeared satisfied
and paid by my executors hereinafter named, within a short time and space after my decease
as convenientlie maie be. Item I will that all such debts and some and sommes of money whatsoever
as I shall be indebted in, or owe of right or in conscience to aine person or persons shalbe well and
truelie answeared satisfied and paid by my executors hereinafter named, within a short time
and space after my decease as may convenientlie maie be. [sic - this item in twice] Item. I will that all and singular my
goods chattells plate ?vessells? readie money household stuff debts thinge and things whatsoever
doth remaine at my decease, after my debts being paid, my ffunerall expenses fullie discharged,
indifferentlie parted and devided? Into three quall partes and ?portions?, one equal third part or
portion whereof I do wholly give, will, and bequeath unto Elizabeth Gilborne my wellbeloved
wief for her parte and portion of and in my said goodes and chattels and belongings by the
laudable use and custome of the cittie of London. One other third part or portion I give will
and bequeath unto my sonne Nicholas Gilborne and to his sonne Daniell Gilborne, to be equallie
devided between them parte and parte like, and the parte of his sonne Daniell Gilborne to be
equallie devided between them parte and parte like, and the parte of his sonne Daniell Gilborne
to be putt into the chamber of London till he be one and twentie years old, And I will
that my sonne Nicholas Gilbourne the ffather of this the said child shall have his sonnes
part and portion before aine other man, putting in sureties for the same, till his sonne be
one and twentie years old, And his sonne happen to die, being more children hereafter as
borne lawfullie begotten of the saide Nicholas Gilborne then I will that they shall
have the parte and portion of the saide Daniell Gilbourne parte and parte equallie
divided amongst them, And all the said children of the said Nicholas Gilborne be dead
before th'age of one and twentie years then I will that my sonne Nicholas Gilbourne
shall have their parts and portions to himself. And the third equall parte or portion
thereof I reserve? Wholly unto my self wherewith to pair? performe and discharge
all and singular my legacies gifts and bequests hereafter in this my pnte? last will
and testament limited and declared, that is to saie, ffirst I give and bequeath unto
Elizabeth Newton my sister's daughter, the somme of threscore pounds of good and
lawfull money of England, to be paid unto her within one half yere after my decease,
if she then be living. And she be dead before she have the oney paid her: then I
will that my sonne Nicholas Gilborne shall have her parte and portion, to the use of his
owne children amongst them parte and parte like, if he have aine children then living,
if he have none then he to have the money to himself for ever. Item I give and
bequeath unto Christopher Challenor that now my prentice, the somme of ffive pounds
of good and lawfull money of England, to be paid unto him within ffouer months after
my decease by my executors hereinafter named. I give will and bequeath unto William
Planar that now my prentice the sum of ffortie shillings, And to John Planar
his sonne and my godsonne, the somme of three of good and lawfull money of England t
o be paid them both of them within ffouer months after my decease, I give and
bequeath unto my brother Daniell Nicholas, the somme of three pounds, And to Anne
his daughter twentie shillings, in all ffouer pounds, to be paid them within ffouer
months after my decease; I give will and bequeath unto Thomas Gilborne my brother's
sonne, ffortie shillings to be paid him within six? months after my decease by my
executors, I give will and bequeath unto my Cosen John Giborne, Skynner, the somme
of six pounds six shillings eight pence of good and lawfull money of England, to be
paid unto him within six months after my decease by my executors, I give will and
bequeath unto maister John Ellis gentleman of Greys Inne. the somme of six pounds six
shillings eight pence of good and lawfull money of England, to be paid unto him within
six months after my decease, I give and bequeath unto six of my tennants in th'alley
every one of them five shillings apiece, And to John Gray my tenant the somme of
tenn shillinges, to be paid to them all within two months after my decease by my
executors hereafter named, that is to saie, I do make my wellbeloved wife Elizabeth
Gilborne and Nicholas Gilborne my sonne, both of them my full executors ??isynctlie??
together parte and parte like in all my goods, my debts being paid by them two as
is above written, And to this my last will and testament, I make my wellbeloved
frende maister John Ellis and my cosen John Gilborne my Overseers to for this my
last will well and truelie paied and performed by my executors, and for their pains
in so doing I will they shall have three pounds six shillings eight pence either of
them paide to them by my executors above named within three months after my decease.
Item I will and bequeath my house in Anoley? [Annerley?, Mosley] called the Three Cranes freehold to my sonne
Nicholas Gilbourne, And two hoses Coppyhold belonging to the same, all those three in
Meleigh aforesaid, I do give firstly for use of my servants to my sonne Nicholas
Gilborne and to Daniell Gilborne his sonne to them and their heires of their bodie lawfully
begotten for ever. Allwaies provided I will that my sonne Nicholas and his sonne Daniell
Gilborne shall paie unto Elizabeth Newton my sister's daughter every year for long as she
liveth ffortie shillings of good and lawfull money of England out of the rents of the Three Cranes
and two tennements in Avsleigh, that is to saie ????? quarter ten shillings, on
towards her living, so long as she liveth.. And she die: then I will that my sonne
Nicholas Gilborne shall have the same to him and his sonne Daniell Gilborne for ever.
I will that the threescore pounds that I have given unto Elizabeth Newton my sisters
daughter shall be put into the Draper's hall in London into the hands of the former
maister wardens, to be let out for eight pounds in the hundred, to the use of the
fore named Elizabeth Newton so long as she liveth, to be paide to her every yere
five pounds six shillings eight pence good and lawfull money of England, to be paid
every quarter twentie five shillings eight pence by the ffouer maister wardens; And I will
that the ffouer maister wardens shall have out of the foresaid eight pounds, every one
of them, for their paine taking in the same shall have three shillings four pence every one
of them every year; And the old wardens to deliver the said threescore pounds to the new
wardens every year to the use of the forenamed Elizabeth Newton, and them to have
every year for their pains taken in this matter, as the ffirst wardens hath. As is above
written, so long as the said Elizabeth Newton liveth. And she die: then I will have my
sonne Nicholas Gilborne and his sonne Daniell shall have the said threescore pounds after
the same rate, at the wardens hands for ever. Also I will and bequeath unto my sonne
Nicholas Gilborne all my apparel belonging to my own bodie, and my great newst?
Chest that my apparel lieth in, to be delivered him by my wife his own mother with
out delay after my decease. In witness whereof to this my last will and testament
the which I have made with mine own hand, and set unto my hand and seal the
twentieth daie of March in Anno One thousand and six hundred, By me John
