William Gilborn was a framework knitter before joining the army. At this time, that profession was becoming very unprofitable owing to the mechanisation taking place. It is possible that this is the reason for him leaving the profession and joining the army.
The military record of William Gilborn is still to be researched in depth. Brief details are:
- Joined 3rd Foot Guards 6 December 1813 to 5 December 1820.
- Was at Waterloo for 2 years, taking part in Wellington's victory against Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo.
- Coldstream Guards 25 December 1820 to 20 April 1827.
William's younger brother, George, was also in the 3rd regiment of Foot from August 1818 (until 1830)
