Whilst we've got through the first 5 years of the South/West Wales Lookup
Exchange's life without this section the time has come for me to provide
some permanently accessible guidance for volunteers.
Much of the material on this site was published by someone else, we use it
with their forbearance, usually informally, and are most grateful
for that. But there is a 'cold wind' blowing from some quarters who just
don't like Lookup Exchanges and I don't want to give anyone cause to criticise
what we do with their published material.
These guidelines below are not particularly new having been expounded in
whole or in part on one mailing list or the other before;
1. Be 100% aware of those occasions when you are using material published by a FHS (or anyone else), always give recognition when it is due in the response - I suggest something along the lines of the following;
"This lookup was made using material published by Glamorgan (or Dyfed) Family History
Society, details of membership and their research service with a full list
of published indexes and transcriptions for sale can be seen on
http://www.glamfhs.org/ (or http://www.dyfedfhs.org.uk/)"
2. Don't accept multiple name lookup requests, a couple of names is fine but anymore and researchers should be advised to buy their own copy of the material concerned. Requests for 'all instances of such and such a name' are not on.
3. What you might do on mailing lists is not Lookup Exchange related as such but I would recommend the same general approach as above and additionally caution against anyone copy/pasting reams of data from CD's produced by a FHS into a mailing list message. If in doubt then ask the list administrator for advice.
4. If you have a problem with anything Lookup Exchange related, or are getting hassle from someone, then by all means get back to me.
5. As web master I reserve the right to accept/decline/remove all material and volunteers' names onto or from these pages.
