Chess in Worcestershire

Worcestershire Chess Association promotes the game within the old boundaries of Worcestershire. You can play for Worcestershire if you: were born in the county; are currently resident in the county; you are attending full-time education in the county; you are a member of a chess club in the county. The association is a constituent unit of the English Chess Federation and affiliated to the Midland Counties Chess Union

Affiliation entitles chess organisations to have information placed on the Association's web pages and to receive news about county matches and tournaments. Worcestershire County field an Open 16-board team and have U-140 and U120 teams in the Midland Counties Chess Union inter-counties competitions. If you would like to be selected for these county teams, please go to the first link above for details.

Andy Moore is the Junior Organiser and Ray Collett organises the Worcestershire Megafinal for UK Chess Challenge.

Worcestershire play in the ECF Brown Pond Trophy and the MCCU competition. Worcestershire can nominate a player to represent the county in the PC Gibbs tournament run by the Midland Counties Chess Union. Results and further information about county teams are available from the link above. Woodcock Prize

Annually an award is made for the 'most enterprising' game played by a Worcestershire player during the season. The winning entry in the 2003-4 season can be seen here. This competition is open to players of affiliated clubs. To enter, send a copy of the game score to secretary Maurice Bissell before the end of April.
