Third Worcestershire Open winners held 23, 24 July 2011 at Worcester University

Open

The winner of the Open section was decided by play-off "Armageddon" games where white must win because a draw counts as a win for black. In compensation, white has the advantage of an extra minute of thinking time - six rather than five minutes.

First: Pavel Besedin (Daugavpils, Latvia) winning the Worcestershire Open title in Armageddon playoffs against Tomasz Sygnowski (West Bromwich, West Midlands) both on 4½ points in standard play games. Third was Miroslav Gruca (Widnes). Ian Kingston (West Nottingham won the under-175 grading prize).

Major(under-160)
First: Richard Desmedt (Wombwell, Barnsley) Brendan O'Gorman (DHSS) and Dean Hartley (Amber Valley, Chesterfield) on 4 points. Ben Graff (Leamington) on 3 points won the under-150 grading prize.

Intermediate (under-135)

Brothers James and Joseph Friar share Intermediate first prize

James Friar and Joseph Friar (both Hagley) shared first prize on 4½ points. Tony Shaw (Malvern) was third on 4 points. Martin Hollan the talented junior from Prague, won the under-125 grading prize.

Minor (under-115)

Matthew Trigg (Solihull) was first on 4½ points, followed by four players on 4: Paul Heeney (Mutual Circle, Kings Heath, Birmingham), Peter Brace (Spondon, Derby) Alan Fraser (Beckenham & Bromley, London), Giles Stanton (Redditch). Nine-year-old Jacob Boswell (Leek & Cheddleton, Staffs) won the under-105 grading prize.
