The 168th annual General meeting of Worcester City Chess Club was held on 29 May at St. Stephen's Church Hall. The President, Dr Ray Collett, thanked members for one of the most successful season's for several years.

Winners of internal competitions held in 2002-3 were presented with trophies. Click here for details and pictures.

City teams are league runners-up but still have chance of glory

Although the first team pressed hard and indeed led for part of the season in Worcestershire Chess Association Division One, the team ended as runners up to three-time winners Halesowen. Steve Mellor, in his first year as Captain said: "this is the highest league position for several years". Ray Collett, Captain of the Worcester & District League team, reported two wins, one loss and a draw, the side failing to clinch the title by going down to Headless Cross Juniors in the last league fixture. In the club team knock-out competition, City are through to the Finals having defeated Headless Cross and St James. Their opponents will be either Kidderminster or Redditch.

The Treasurer, Roger Nall, reported a healthy balance and it was decided to keep subscription rates at the same level (£25 (standard), £16 (concessions), £5 (juniors). An increase in membership was reported, with several of the 'new boys' adding strength to the club's league teams.

We hope to arrange some social nights during the summer, so watch this space! The next full club nights will be on Thursday 4th September at St Stephen's Church Hall when a presentation will be made for the best League performance during the previous season (when the results of the last match of the season will be known).
