Worcester & District Chess News 2009

The final of the 2009 Bennett Cup (reporter Andrew Farthing) took place at the Kidderminster club. The contenders were the defending champion, Maurice Bissell, and the highest graded player in the event, Brian Turner. Brian had won the toss, giving him choice of colours but requiring him to travel from Malvern for the game. As event organiser, I was in charge of crowd control. In practice, this meant making sure that I didn't do anything to disturb the players and frowning at any of the social club members who wandered in to play the slot machines. The game proved to be an excellent tussle between well-matched opponents, whose mutual respect was obvious in the gentlemanly way in which the game was conducted.
