Midlands Junior Chess League
Team Tournament 2010

Junior members of Hagley Chess Club were surprise winners at this MJCL event on Sunday 21st March 2010 at Malvern College. This was the first time since the tournament began that Worcester Junior Chess Academy haven't won the Championship trophy and Hagley achieved this result inspite of being a player short. Hagley juniors have vowed to return next year to defend their title

The format of the league was an initial all-play-all team tournament with each pair of players playing two rapidplay games with time controls of 15 minutes for the game. Match wins were scored 3 and draws 1.

They say time is a great leveller in these situations and even the strongest players were making mistakes as last year's bottom club, Malvern College, took the tournament by surprise and qualified for the Championship Final with one game to spare. They were joined in the final by Hagley who required the WJCA 1 not to beat Malvern in the final game, which they didn't, making a 4 - 4 draw.

In the Moore Dolan Championship, Hagley, 2 - 0 down after 10 minutes, levelled the match with two fine displays on boards 1 and 2 to force an extra time playoff. Malvern sadly lost the play-off handing Hagley the title.

The event was sponsored by Malvern College and again organised by Andrew Moore with Matthew Carr the Arbiter. The number of players in a team was reduced to four and this was welcomed by all the participating teams.

The Midlands Junior Chess League will again return next year at around the same time of year and at the same venue. Malvern College are proud sponsors of the event and their excellent playing venue and free lunch makes this tournament very enjoyable for all those who take part.
