Major Club Trophies

Internal Tournaments & Trophies

These are organised by the Competitions Secretary, Ray Collett (telephone 01905 454754). In the 2009-9010 season, the club organised two single-evening, fast-play events, both of which were controlled by Andrew Farthing, and a Christmas Variant Chess evening. There are three tournaments played thoughout the season this year resuming a club tradition that has lapsed in the previous three years.

The Five-Minute Tournament ran on 22 October 2009. In this event, a player must complete all moves of the game within five minutes and it is sometimes known as Blitz play. Steve Mellor won the 2009-10 Five-Minute Tournament and holds the Knight Trophy. Read More ...

The Lightening Tournament was played on 4 March 2010. In this version of the game, players must move when a buzzer sounds every 10 seconds and if a king is left in check it may be captured to end the game! Unlike the Five-Minute game, no move must take longer than 10 seconds. Ray Collett won the 2009-10 competition. Read More ...

The Competition Secretary's plans were thrown out of the window after Peter Kitson, showed us Imitator Chess. True to traditions at this event, every player was declared a winner. Read More...

All-Play-All. This tournament runs throughout the season so that members can play tournament chess on ordinary club nights. For the 2009-10 season, the competition is divided into sections so there will be trophies for the best novice, and the best scoring in the minor section, most improved player as well as for the player winning overall. The Knock Out Championship. All club members are paired for the first round and players must complete their game according to a schedule set out by the Controller. Read More ...

Rapidplay. This too runs throughout the year and a player's moves must be completed within 30 minutes. This tournament is for members who need to leave early or who arrive late. The highest scorer wins. Read More ...
