Worcestershire County League

Worcester City play in Division 1 of the this league. The competition trophy is a magnificent nineteenth century silver rosebowl. These matches are over 6 boards. Away teams have white on odd boards. Time control is 42 moves in 1½ hours. At the conclusion of the playing session and in the event of a game being unfinished, the player to move should seal a move. When this has been done, players can (a) agree a result, (b) agree to submit the game for adjudication, or (c) agree to play on. If one player wishes to play on and the other to go to adjudication, the player wishing to play on must travel to the venue of the player who prefers adjudication. A date for resumption should be agreed and should be within 14 days of first playing session and communicated to both team captains. The city side has a tough challenge to improve upon their last position in the league last year. Detailed league results are available (open in new windows) for the last three seasons starting with the 2008-9 page.

Worcester City also compete in the Worcestershire Knock Out Team Handicap competition for the Wheatley Cup, which they currently hold. Matches are played over 5 boards and games are played with a time control of 1½ hours for completion. Captains toss for choice of colour. The handicap element of this competition is based on the grades of team players so that strong teams have to beat weaker teams by a larger margin than the normal 1 point. The handicap system means that to win a match, a team must perform above its normal strength in order to win. This year Worcester City team regained the trophy from Hagley and have now won it 4 years out of six years the competition has run.
