One of the quickest ways to get ahead in your search is to find census entries for the family you are researching. On line now are the 1851,1861, 1871, 1881,1891 and 1901 censuses. The 1881 can searched free of charge on the "Family Search" website run by the Church of the Latter Day Saints (Mormons) and the 1901 is available on the website "1901 Census Online" website where the index can be consulted free and you pay by voucher or credit card for a copy of the actual census entry or transcribed data. On the "ancestry.co.uk" website are all the available censuses which for a yearly subscription can be consulted as much as you like.

For your Scottish family research "scotlandspeople.gov.uk" has the Scottish censuses from 1851 to 1901 and births from 1553-1905, marriages 1553 to 1930 and deaths 1855 to 1955 all on a pay to view basis. The added advantage with these records is you can view certificates on-line.
