Beith has always been noted for its schools. Records show a schoolmaster being employed in the town in 1639. In 1686 William Clark received the stipend of 200 marks per year at the same time that the first school is on record.

In more recent times the Spiers school was set up by an endowment in 1885. Its 15 acres had a magnificent building and extensive sports fields. Now it even the ruin has gone and it is an amenity area to go take the dog on a walk through the overgrown grounds.
