The sorry state of house where Witherspoon lived

And Now

Article from "The Scotsman"

While a visiting a cousin in Alloway a few weeks ago, I learned from him that John Witherspoon's house in Beith is in bad shape. Since Witherspoon is revered at Princeton University, the former College of New Jersey of which he was President in the latter half of the 1700's, I thought it might help if someone were to write a letter to the Princeton Alumni Weekly, a magazine which reaches many well-to-do Princeton Alumni each week. It is possible that one or more alumni might wish to provide funds to help restore the Witherspoon house in Beith. Perhaps someone in Beith might be willing to write such a letter, or if I could find some responsible person for respondents to contact, I could write the letter myself.

Thanks very much for the note. I will look forward to hearing from Ken McElvey concerning the restoration of the Witherspoon house. Our University President, Harold Shapiro, mentioned to me a few weeks ago that Princeton University is partnering with a University near Beith (I did not realize there was one) to have two bronze statues of Witherspoon cast, one for us, and one for them.

The institution we are in partnership with is Paisley University, and as I understand it both institutions will end up with statues of Witherspoon done by Alexander Stoddart.

I am Chair of the University Research Board at Princeton, a part-time administrative job roughly equivalent to Vice President for Research at most American universities.
