NEWS
CHRISTIAN AID Door to door collections on behalf of Christian Aid took place in Beith last week with the merry band of willing volunteers covering all streets in the town. As usual, a special Christian Aid themed event was held at Beith Cross last Friday. This year’s theme was prisoners of poverty, highlighting the many countries of the world where oppression, famine, poverty and inequality blight the lives of ordinary people. To illustrate the problems of oppression, poverty and famine, a temporary prison was erected at Beith Cross and among the volunteer prisoners who were temporarily shackled and deprived of their freedom were Rev Fiona Ross, Councillor Jean Highgate and Ranald Mair, head master of Geilsland School. Indeed Ranalph Mair was earlier in the day ‘arrested’ at Geilsland by Constable Sandy Brown who was assisted on this occasion by Rev Fiona Ross, who was deputised as a Special Constable for this special occasion. Strangely enough such was the enthusiasm of the Geilsland lads to ensure the release and safe return of their headie that a sum of money was quickly raised at the school and the relieved headmaster was released and subsequently added to that figure with the coffers of Christian Aid benefiting by around £100. Well done everyone at Geilsland. There was also a set of stocks located at the Cross where the Messrs Ross, Highgate and Mair found themselves severely pilloried. The weans from Beith and Gateside School were in their element as they enthusiastically threw wet sponges at the sporting but very drookit trio. As well as being a place of hearty humour, the sale of Fairly Traded products was also an important aspect of the day and items on sale included coffee, cereals and chocolate. The local Co-op stock fair trade goods and buyers are assured that those involved in producing fairly traded products have not been exploited in the production process with workers receiving a fair wage in good working conditions. The turnout by the public at the themed event was lower than in previous years, but the organisers pass on their thanks to everyone who donated during Christian Aid week and helped during the themed event in the town centre. The presence of choirs from Gateside and Beith Primary Schools had the crowds enthralled with their musical talent. In addition, Beith High Play Group and Braefoot Nursery children enjoyed visiting the event. A special thanks to Alison Elliott of Independence who provided towels for the pilloried drookit trio.

DOG GONE The talk of the steamie last week in Beith was not Trearne Quarry, the delightful state of Beith Cross, the promise of better footballing days down Bellsdale way or even the large number of boarded-up shops in Main Street. No, the Beith blethers were dreadfully upset about dogs-poo. Yes, dogs-poo. One large dog which was unseen, but described as having to have been at least the size of a small pony, managed to deposit a sizzling hot and very large steaming dollop of dogs-poo some three feet up the wall of a Main Street shop, right beside the entrance. Needless to say locals and the proprietor were extremely annoyed. After several buckets of hot water were applied the peeved proprietor eventually successfully removed the offending package. However, this had the Saturday morning locals on their high horse about dogs dirt being so regularly deposited on the streets (and walls) of Beith. “Dog owners need to take their responsibilities seriously and they certainly don’t at the moment,” was one comment from a dissatisfied Beithite. “You can hardly walk along the Main Street without tramping on dirt,” moaned another head-shaking local. A finger-wagging well-known Beithite went further saying, “Beith must be the dog-poo capital of Scotland. I’ve yet to see a dog owner with a pooper scooper doing the decent thing.” Now, there is no doubt that most dog owners are reasonably responsible, but the range and variety of evidence to the contrary can be seen all too clearly by those who have to quickly and skilfully manoeuvre to dodge the dirt. Is it unreasonable to expect dog owners to clear up after their pets or are the moaners simply barking up the wrong tree!

SCOUTS Beith Scout Group has had a busy few months carrying out various activities in and around the community. The Scouts and Explorers assisted Beith Historical Society in their clean up of the old Sutherlands Garage site in Eglinton Street, which has made a remarkable difference to this vacant site. The boys took part in the clean up over two Saturdays and the outcome was a more attractive site for people passing the area. A big thank you to all the boys that took part in the clean up. The Group recently took part in a sponsored cycle around Millport in aid of group funds. The day was a huge success as the weather was excellent making the day fun for all the participants. The money is still being collected in so the final sum raised will be intimated later. The Scouts pass on their thanks to Mapes Cycle Hire in Millport for their kind discount on the hire of the bikes. The whole group carried out a bag packing session at Beith Co-op in aid of funds for the Janefield MAP Club. This happy group meet at Beith Community Centre on a Thursday. The bag packing raised over £500.00 and a group of Explorers and leaders paid a visit to the club to hand over the money and a cheque. The boys from Cubs through to Explorers took part in an impromptu group camp last month at Lapwing Lodge in Renfrewshire. 32 leaders and boys spent the weekend carrying out various scouting activities organised by the leaders form the group. The activities ranged from compass making to shelter and raft building. The weather on the weekend was first class adding to a highly successful camp. A big thank you goes to Delice de France at Glasgow Airport for their kind donation on muffins for the boys to have with their lunch and dinner. The boys carry out a very busy programme each week and it is impractical to try and describe all the activities that they take part in. Thursday June, 3 is the AGM for the Scout Group and meeting regarding Summer Camp. All parents are welcome to attend the AGM as this is also the meeting regarding summer camp. The meeting will take place in the lounge of the Eglinton Inn and will start at 7:30 pm. On Saturday May, 29 the group is having a bag packing session at Beith Co-op in aid of funds for their trip to Moscow and St Petersburg, Russia in October. The Scouts hope that they can continue to count on the support of the people of Beith in making our events successful. From Friday 18th – Sunday 20th June is the groups annual Summer Camp. This year 50 boys and 10 leaders are off to Lochgoilhead Scout Centre for an action packed weekend of sailing, abseiling, canoeing, gorge running and many more activities. Weekends of this nature are incredibly expensive but due to a donation by the Beith Christian Action Group (Thrift Shop) of a £1000.00. This means that the boys can travel to the centre by coach, adding to the fun of the weekend. On Saturday 26th June – Monday 28th June 15 boys are taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Silver and Bronze Expedition. Both expeditions will take place in the Loch Doon area but each section will be run separately. Anyone wishing information about Scouting as a hobby and leisure activity in Beith is asked to contact Group Scout Leader, Dr Terry Williams on 01505 502429. He will be only too happy to provide the relevant information or refer enquiries in the direction of one of the relevant section leaders.
DOORS OPEN Beith’s newest high-class hairdressing salon, Independence, at Beith Cross is now open and doing a roaring trade. The salon is holding a Doors Open Day on Saturday May, 22 when members of the public are cordially invited to drop in to see the new facilities on offer for the fashion conscious women of Beith and district. Last week it was mentioned that Independence’s proprietor, Allison Elliott, had a daughter, Nocole (12), son Craig (9), but she also has another son, Cameron (4). Sorry for missing you out last week, Cameron. Oh, yes, almost forgot to mention that there will be a glass of bubbly on offer to visitors at the open day this Saturday, so be there folks. Jings, better make sure that Sandy and Jim, the local community officers, are on duty at the Cross to control the crowds, eh! Congratulations to Alison Elliott on the official opening of Independence.
CALOR GAS AWARD Beith and District Community Council had great success last year when they entered the town in five categories of the Calor Gas Scottish Community of the Year. They have decided to enter again this year. The categories are business, young people, environment, community life and older people. If any group or organisation has been involved in projects or innovative working in Beith and District which relate to the above categories particularly since June 2003 to the present, details of this would be very helpful for the Community Council submission. Contact Donald Reid on 01505-503801 as soon as possible or preferably drop in a brief note of recent activities which fit with the above categories.
COUNCILLOR Councillor Jean Highgate advises: “I have been informed that all going well, lights will be installed in the Orr Trust Park this week and thereafter the paths will be resurfaced. This could mean a specific saving for the Beith Playpark Action Group as they had quite a large sum budgeted for the lighting of the new play area. After several delays, the surface of the new ball court should also be fixed this week. All the bedding plants for Beith have now been ordered and I have fought Beith’s case for being top of the list for planting out and also for weed spraying. I am as frustrated as everyone else at the length of time it seems to take to get promises turned into action. Everything however comes to those who wait!”
