CRAWFORDS OF BEITH, AYRSHIRE, SCOTLAND

  

 

This is a list of CRAWFORD families who lived in Beith.  It is a work in progress extracted from the IGI, OPR, Beith Church records, gravestones at the Beith and Head Street Church cemeteries and the 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881, and 1891 Census records.

Unless otherwise noted, all children were christened or born in Beith and couples were married there.

 Arrangement is alphabetical by father's name, then approximately chronologically  by wedding date.  Women as head of households are listed at the end

 The list was started by Meg Nixon of El Cerrito, California (#200) and was added to, and computerised by her distant "cousin" Sheila Crawford Byrne (# 126).

1.         Alexander Crawford b 26 Oct 1777 and Margaret Loudon married 21 Jan 1804.  Alexander is the son of Robert Crawford and Janet Cunningham (see # 165).  On the baptismal records of his children Alexander is listed as a labourer in Newton and Whang.  In 1841 Alexander was 65 years old and a widower.  He was living with his 76 year old mother Janet Crawford on Whang Street and working as a reeler.  Also living there was his 56 year old sister Margaret, and his children: Margaret age 31, Agnes age 25, both working as Q sewers; and Robert age 20 who was working as a weaver.  In 1851 Alexander was 75 and working as a coal vendor and living with his daughter, Margaret and her husband, John Brown.  Margaret was 38 and working as a muslin sewer.  John was a 42 year old labourer from Dalry.  Their children David 4, Elizabeth 4 and Margaret were also living with them.

2          Alexander Crawford b. 1846 and Janet Kirkwood Jamieson married 01 Sept 1871.  In 1861 Alexander was 14, working as a lapper and living with his widowed mother, Janet Crawford (see # 258) and 17 year old brother Robert.  Before he was married in 1871 Alexander was 24, working as a miner and still living with his mother Janet Crawford at 112 Whang Street.  In 1881 Alexander was living on Townhead St.  in a house with 2 rooms with windows.  He was working as an iron miner.  His wife Janet was dead and his sons, William and Hugh were living with him, as was his 74 year old mother.  By 1891, the 44 year old Alexander was remarried to the former Mary Graham ( b. 1850 in Kilbarchan).  They were living on Townhead St. in a house with 2 rooms and windows.  His mother was no longer living with them.  He was working as a general labourer.  His two elder sons were also living with him.  William was 18 and working as an apprentice cabinet maker and Hugh was 16 and working as an apprentice wood turner.  Also living with them was Mary's son Robert Graham, age 4 ( born in Johnstone) and Alexander and Mary's daughter, Janet Crawford, age 2.

3          Alexander Crawford b. 1852 d. 24 Sept 1931 and Isabella Houston ( b. 1853 in     New Brunswick, America d. 22 Aug 1928)  In 1881 he was working as a             blacksmith.  Alexander is the son of John Crawford and Margaret Cunningham      (see # 128).  In 1891 they were living in a place with 3 rooms with windows on             Laigh Road.  Alexander was working as a blacksmith.  Besides their six children        they also have a boarder living with them, 32 year old George Houston who might             be related to Isabella and might be working with their son John, since they are    both clerks in cabinet factories.  George Houston was also born in Houston.              Alexander and Isabella are buried in Lair E94A Beith Cemetery.  The headstone reads, " Erected by Alexander and Isabella Crawford in living memory of their             daughter Jenny, wife of R.W. Peters who died 31 Dec 1910 in her 26th year.     Isabel Houston died 22 Aug 1928 age 76 years, wife of the said Alexander            Crawford who died 24 Sep 1931 aged 79 years..  Their son James Houston             M.C.R.V.S. died 12 Dec 1929 and is interred at Newmarket.  Jesus is tenderly            calling us home".  The headstone on Lair E94B reads  " Also their elder son John         Crawford M.R.C.V.S. killed in motor accident at Middleburg, S. Africa 1st Feb   1938 Helen Mary Hilda / Leeper widow of the above who died 8 Feb 1958/  Their             daughter Annie Edgar / Crawford died 27 Oct 1967 in her 86th year".

The headstone on the Lair E94C reads, " Also their grandson Alexander John  Lieut. R.N. killed in flying accident 16 Feb 1947 in his 26th year, dearly beloved son of John Crawford and Helen Leeper his wife".

2.Allan Campbell Crawford  b.  18 Apr 1828 d. 3 May 1894 and Elizabeth Orr

( b. 27 Sept 1839 d. 30 Jun 1905 in Australia).  Allan is the son of James Crawford and Margaret Dunlop ( see # 78).  He lived at the home of his mother until he was at least 32.

 

3.Andrew Crawford  - wife unknown .  On baptismal record of his son, he lived in Rysum in Dalry.

7.Andrew Mitchal Crafourd and Mary Crafourd  married 04 Dec 1827.  According to the baptismal records of his children, Andrew was a weaver.  (Might be  # 267)

8.Andrew Crawford b. 1811 and Jean Anderson (b. 1816) married 29 May 1830.  Andrew was the son of John Crawford and Elizabeth Stevenson (see  # 119) .  On all the baptismal records of his children his occupation was listed as merchant.   In 1841 Andrew was 30 years old and living on Whang Street next door to Robert and Agnes Rodger.  Also living with Andrew were Jane 25, John 7, James 5, Ann 3, and William.  Jean Steven, a 20 year old servant and William Lee?, a 25 year old minister were also living there.  In 1851 Jane was a 42 year old widow listing no occupation and still living on Whang Street in a house next to Andrew's Aunt Marion Crawford  (see  # 264) and two houses away from Andrew's siblings, Elizabeth,  Hugh and Marion  (see #59).  Living with Jane were her children James 15, Margaret A. 13, William 11 and Eliza 8.

10.Andrew Crawford  b. 1833 in Old Crummock and Margaret  (b. 1832 Old Crummock).  In 1871 Andrew was a farmer and he and Margaret were living alone.  The location of where they were living is unreadable.  In 1881 they were living on Shotts Road in a house with one room and a window with their daughter Margaret.  Andrew was working as an agricultural labourer.  In 1891 Andrew and Margaret were living with Margaret's brother Jack  (age 64) at Jack's farm at Shotts where Andrew is an ag. lab.  Also living there are their daughter, 17 year old Margaret and Jack's 21 year old niece, Marion Jack.  The girls were working as dairymaids.

11.Andrew Crawford and Jeanie Jamieson.  The headstone on Lair  E95 at Beith Cemetery reads,    " Erected  by Andrew Crawford in memory of his daughter Agnes Cunningham who died 13 July 1918 aged 24.  Also his dear wife Jeanie Jamieson who died aged 89.  Also his son William who died 25 April 1958 aged 56 beloved husband of Elizabeth Beck."   The headstone on Lair  E90 reads,         " In loving memory of Agnes C. Crawford who died 13 July 1918 aged 24 years.  A token of esteem from her shopmates."

12.Andrew Crawford b. 1896  d. 13 Sept 1979  and Janet Blair.  The headstone on Lair  G42 at Beith Cemetery reads,    " In loving memory of our dear beloved son Hugh M.H. Blair who died 7 Oct 1942 aged 12 1/2 years.  Hugh Clachan who died 24 Oct 1946 in his 4th year.  Also Thomas Blair who died 8th Dec  1964 aged 80.  Also his beloved wife Elizabeth Monaghan who died 28th Dec 1973 aged 85 years.  Andrew Crawford died 13th Sept 1979 aged 83 beloved husband of Janet Blair.  Sadly missed."

13.Andrew Crawford  b. 1904  d. 30 Oct 1967  and Jeanie Herbertson.  The headstone on Lair  E23 at Beith Cemetery reads,  " In loving memory of Andrew Crawford who died 30 Oct 1967 aged 63 years, beloved husband of Jeanie Herbertson,  At rest."

18.       Carrick Crawford  b. 1900  d. 19 Apr 1970 and Jeanie Ferguson  (b 1902  d. 30 Apr 1974).  The headstone at Lair F18 at Beith Cemetery reads,  "In loving memory of Carrick Crawford died 19 April 1970 aged 70 years.  Beloved husband of Jeanie Ferguson died 30 April 1974 72 years."

 

19.Charles Crawford  b. 1873  d. 05 Nov 1948 and Margaret Barr ( b. 1873  d. 27 Dec 1954).  The headstone at Lair  G94 at Beith Cemetery reads,     " In loving memory of Charles Crawford died 5 Nov 1948 aged 75 years.  Also his wife Margaret Barr died 27th Dec 1954 aged 81 years.  Safe in the arms of Jesus.  Erected by their daughter Katie."

20.David Crawford  b. 1843 and Isabella White (b. 1844 in Barhead, Renfrewshire) married 30 Aug 1861.  David was the son of Robert Crawford 

( # 173) and Elizabeth Pollock.  In 1861 he was living with them and working as a block printer.   In 1871 David was still not living with Isabella.  His mother was widowed by 1871, but he is not living with her either.  Isabella is still listed as married on the 1871 Census and living on New Street, but had no occupation.  Her four young children are living with her.  In 1881 Isabella was a widow living at 6 Caldervale in New Monkland.  She was 37 years old and had no occupation.  Living with her were her children, Robert 20, William 18, Elizabeth 14, Maggie 11, and John 8.  Also boarding with them was William Wallace age 5 born in Airdrie, Lanarkshire.

21Dugald Crawford and Flora McAlpine married 22 Nov 1811.  In 1812 Dugald was a labourer in town, in 1816 he was a labourer in Gateside and in 1818, a labourer in Haglehead.  In 1822 and 1825 he lived in Trehoune.

            (b. 1835 in Kilmonell, Argyll) married 12 Jun 1857.  In 1861 living on Eglinton Street and working as ag. lab.  Lived next to William and Jane Crawford  ( see #          236).  In 1881 at 15 Kersland Road, Dalry,  Duncan and Helen (45)  with         children: John (22) ironstone miner; Duncan (20) ironstone miner;  Neil R. (14) ironstone miner; Ronald (12) scholar; David (9); and  Barbara (2).

26.       Gavin Crawford   b. 1781 and Margaret Alexander married 07 Oct 1808.  Gavin is the son of John Crawford and Margaret Smith  (see # 118).  On the 1810, 1812, 1814 baptismal records of his children, Gavin's occupation is listed as cooper in town.  In 1817 he is listed as a weaver in Buns Wynd and in 1819 as a weaver in Backburn.

27.       Gavin Crawford   b. 1826 and Marion Strathern  ( b. 1830 Paisley Abbey)  married 23 Sep 1848.  Gavin is the son of Margaret Crawford ( see # 261).  Between the time of their son Robert's birth in 1850 and the 1851 Census, they moved from Beith to Paisley.  They lived at  2 Willmeadow Street, Paisley in 1851.  He was a shoemaker employing 2 men.  His brother and sister John ( b. 1829) and Janet  (b. 1840), both born in Beith, were living with Gavin, Marion and Robert in Paisley.  In 1861 Gavin was 35 and Marion 31.  She lists her birthplace as Dalry.  He was a shoemaker employing 9 men and 1 boy.  Living with them at 13 Hight Street, Paisley were Robert 11, Marion 9, Gavin 7, Bryce 4, John 2 and a servant Janet Kerr 18 from Luss, Dunbartonshire.  In 1881 Gavin was living at Kilmalcolm in Renfrewshire and still making boots and shoes.  His sons Robert, John and James were living with him.  Robert was a 31 year old shipbroker.  John was 22 and James was 17 and they were both in the shoemaking business.

28.Gavin Crawford b. 1841 and Jane Fleming ( b. 1844  d. 31 Oct 1877) married 30 Aug 1867 at the Evangelical Union Church.  Gavin is the son of John Crawford and Janet Rodger (see # 126).  Jane is the daughter of John Fleming, handloom weaver and Janet Fulton.  Jane and her father, John Fleming are buried in Lair C21B in Beith Cemetery.  The inscription on their headstone reads, " In memory of John Fleming who died 25 Oct 1886 aged 76 years.  Also his daughter Jeannie wife of Gavin Crawford who died 31 Oct 1877 age 33 year."  On the 30 Aug 1867 record of their marriage, Jane gives her address as Buns Wynd in Beith.  Gavin gives his address as 45 Hospital Street, Gorbals, Glasgow and his occupation as boiler maker.  On Sep 23, 1880 Gavin was married to Elizabeth Wyllie ( b. 1855 Ayr)  at The Free Church, 80 Green St., Newton, Ayrshire.  Her parents were Andrew Wyllie, builder and Elizabeth Turner.  On the wedding certificate Gavin lists his occupation as a timekeeper and Elizabeth lists hers as domestic servant.   In 1881 the family was living at 85 Lambhill Street, Govan, Lanarkshire and Gavin was still working as a timekeeper.  Living with Gavin and Elizabeth are his children, John 13, Jane 11, Janet 9 and Margaret 5.  There are also two lodgers living with the family, Isaac McCrunib and Quinton Young, both 23, unmarried, born in Ayr and listing their occupation as iron moulders.  In 1891 Gavin is 50 and Elizabeth is 35.  They are both still living at 85 Lambhill Street in Govan.  Gavin is working as a " bolt and nut maker timekeeper".  Living with them are children, John 23, Jeanie 21, Margaret 15, Andrew 9, Agnes 5 and Gavin 3.

30.        George Crawford  b. 1828  d. May 1870 ( buried Jun 03) and Margaret Young

( b. 1825  d. 1899)  married 19 Jul 1851.   In 1871 George was working as beamer and they were living in Buns Wynd.  Possible son of Johnston Crawford and Stevenson (see # 152).  In 1881 Margaret is a 50 year old widow living at 41 Buns Wynd with her children Mary, John, Maggie, George and Annie.  Boarding there also is Annie Crawford, born in Beith and in 1881 she was 28 and working as a beamer at the Barrmill Thread works.  The headstone at Lair B32A at Beith Cemetery reads,  "Erected by Margaret Young  -----y of her husband -----e Crawford  ----st May 1870  ---ears.  And of their son ---n Crawford   --2nd April 1883 aged 26 years.  Also of their daughter Annie Stevenson who died 02 Mar 1895 in her 6th year --- ---- above Margaret Young died ----mber 1899 / ag--years.  Their daughter Mary died 10 Dec 1921 age 67 years.  Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord. Rev XIV 13."  The headstone on Lair B32B  reads,  " Also the son-in-law Jo-- Young husband of Margaret Crawford who died -- Jan 1923 in his 64th year.  Also the above Margaret Crawford died --No 1933 aged 72 years."

57.       Hugh Crawford   b. 1781  d. 1845.  In 1841 he was 60 years old living on Whang Street  and working as a thread manufacturer.  Might be the same as 

#  54.  Living with him were his sister Janet Clark 60 years old, and his grandsons, Hugh Crawford 15 years old  (see  #  62)  and James Crawford age 14 (see  #  88).  Hugh and James were the sons of James Crawford and Margaret Dunlop (see  #  78).  The headstone at Lair C117D  at Beith Cemetery reads,

" In memory of his only brother and two sisters / Jean Crawford died 1834 aged 66.  Hugh Crawford of Balgray Muir and Muirston died 1845 aged 66 years / Mrs. Janet Crawford or Clark died 1850 aged 72 years / buried in Relief Churchyard / Also his children Jessie Crawford or Broun / died 6th Ap. 1900 /

Margaret Dunlop Crawford died 11 Oct 1821  'Them also which sleep will God bring with Him'   1st Thess.  IV".

59.       Hugh Crawford b.  1814   d. 27 Dec 1885  and Margaret Gibson married 19 Sep 1836.  Hugh was the son of John Crawford and Elizabeth Stevenson  (see  # 119).    Margaret was the daughter of William Gibson, a grocer in Beith.  At the time of her marriage her father was deceased.  On his wedding record in 1836 Hugh lists his occupation as merchant.  By 1851 Hugh was a 37 year old merchant, but Margaret was dead.  He was living at his sister Elizabeth Crawford's  (see  #  249) house on Whang Street.  In 1851 Elizabeth was 44, unmarried and listed as head of household.  Also living there was Elizabeth and Hugh's sister, Marion Kerr (b. 1812) and Hugh's children, John age 12 and Margaret age 10, as well as Janet Stevenson, a servant.  In 1851 Marion Kerr is listed as a 39 year old married annuitant.  Marion had married Daniel Kerr on 24 Apr 1837.  They had donated 11 shillings to the poor at the time of their marriage, a large donation.  Daniel was the son of Robert Kerr of Kerrsland, Dalry.  Marion and Daniel had a daughter, Elizabeth on 10 May 1838, but the child died on 06 Sep 1839.  In 1861 Hugh was no longer living with his sister Elizabeth.  On 31 Jul 1855 he married Barbara Snodgrass.  In 1861 Elizabeth was still living with her sister Marion and Hugh's eldest son, John who was a 22 year old draper, and the 48 year old unmarried cousin Janet Stevenson who was still working as a domestic servant.  In 1871 Elizabeth was living by herself on Kirkstyle and working as a draper (see  #  163).  In 1861, Hugh and Barbara were living on New Street.  Hugh was a master draper.  His 12 year old "son-in-law", William Gibson (b. Ireland) (see  # 265) was living with them as well as their children James 4, and Hugh 2 months.  The headstone at Lair C112a  in Beith Cemetery  where Hugh is buried reads , " In memory of James Dunlop Snodgrass Crawford died 31st Mar 1876, 19 yr 7 months / Hugh William Crawford died 1 Aug 1865 age 4  1/2 yrs / Hugh Crawford 27 Dec 1885  72 yrs / Barbara Snodgrass wife of Hugh Crawford 11 May 1895 76 yrs ."  The headstone on C112b reads,  " In loving memory of John Crawford 29 Jan 1893 and his children Hugh, William, James, and John who died in infancy / Margaret Dale his wife 14 Jul 1909 / also their son Hugh William Crawford M.B.CH.B. 17 Feb 1913 & was interred at Houden, East Yorkshire

62.       Hugh Crawford b. 09 Dec 1821  d. 07 May 1880, buried in Lair  # 102 Head Street Church, Beith  and Mimi Lucardio (b. 1836 Rotterdam, Holland).  Hugh was the son of James Crawford and Margaret Dunlop ( see #  78).  On the 1841 Census he was a 15 year old living with his grandfather Hugh (see #  57).  In 1851 he had a house of his own on Whang Street and was a 29 year old Justice of the Peace and the proprietor of the flax mill employing 200 workers.  His unemployed brother, Alan C. Crawford who was 22 years old was living with him.  About 1855 Hugh married Theresa Forrester who died sometime before 1861 since on the 1861 Census Hugh is listed as a widower living with 4 year old James F.  (see # 85).  Hugh was living at Crummock House and his flax spinning works employed 250 workers.  Living with him were his 46 year old Aunt-in-law Agnes Edger.  Hugh and Mimi must have married later than 1861.  In 1871, Hugh was working as Justice of Peace, landowner and flax spinner employing 600 workers.  Their house had 14 rooms with windows.  Living with Hugh and Mimi were their children   James 14, Pieter 8, Hew 7, Agatha 5, Margaret 4, and Dignus 1, and three servants, Jane McClure 27, nursery servant, Catherine Folfer 21, housemaid and Matha H. Gemmell 18, cook from Largs.

77.       James Crawford  b. 1798 in Dalry.  In 1871 he was a 73 year old unmarried  

farmer of 50 acres arable and 50 acres moss living in Newhouse in a house with two rooms with windows.  Also living there were three servants: 58 year old Jean Kerr, 56 year old Mary Kerr and 40 year old Peter Montgomery.  There might be a connection with John Crawford and wife Mary Kerr  (see # 142).

 

78.       James Crawford  b. 1801 in Craigie  d. 1874  and Mary Andrew ( b. 1803 in

Tarbolton  d. 26 Oct 1887 at Newton of Beltrees)  married 24 Dec 1824 Kirkmichael, Ayrshire.  On 1841 Census and the 1845 birth record of their son Robert, James and Mary are listed as farmers at Langbarr.  Living with them were their children James 14, Thomas 13, Jane 11, Margaret 4, and John 2.  In 1851 they had an 80 acre farm employing 1 man.  Their son James was no longer living with them, but Robert had been born by then.  In 1871 they were living at Sidehead and farming 30 acres of arable land and 30 acres of moss.  Living with them were their 29 year old son George and grand-daughters 12 year old Mary Ann and 10 year old Catherine.  These are the daughters of Margaret Crawford (see #  64).  Catherine was born in Kilwinning.  Also living there was a 14 year old servant born in Irvine, Jeannie Syme.  In 1881 Mary was a 76 year old widow / annuitant.  She was living with her son George in Largs.  At that time George was a 39 year old farmer married to  30 year old Hanna.  Hanna was from Dunlop.  Also living with them were George and Hanna's one year old daughter, Mary Andrew who was b. in Largs.  James and Mary are buried in Lair B79 in Beith Cemetery ( also see #  64 , 85,  196,  & 199).

78.       James Crawford  b. 1781  d. 1845  and Margaret Dunlop ( b. 1799  d. 01 Dec 1867), buried in Lair  # 102 Head Street Churchyard, Beith, married 05 Mar 1821  (see  #  79).  James was a thread manufacturer.  On 1836 baptismal record of their son, William, their residence was listed in Barr  (see  #  57).   Margaret was widowed by 1851 and living on Whang Street.  Also living with her in 1851 were her children James 24, an unmarried thread manufacturer, Jane 19 and Margaret 10.  Also living with them was a 23 year old servant, Mary Good from Saltcoats.  In 1861 Margaret was living in a house on Eglinton Street ( in 1861 the former Whang Street was called Eglinton Street), with her 32 year old unmarried son Allan who did not have an occupation.  They had two servants living with them, 48 year old Christina Peacock and 19 year old Elizabeth Hamilton who was from Pittenween, Lanarkshire.  This house was two away from where John Crawford and Janet Rodgers lived  (see  # 88).   James and Margaret are buried in Lair C117A in Beith Cemetery.  The headstone reads,  "Erected in memory of James Crawford, Esq. of North Barr and Barrmill, born 1781, died 1845 aged 64 years.  Margaret Dunlop his spouse born 1799 died 1867 aged 68 years buried in Relief Churchyard and their children  Janet Crawford died 1826 aged 2 years.  I am the Resurrection and the Life/  John XI  25th."    Lair C117B  reads,  " Margaret Dunlop Crawford born 1838 died in infancy.  Margaret Dunlop Crawford born 1839 died in infancy.  Robert Crawford died 1866 Petersburg VA  USA aged 32 years.  William Crawford drowned in 1866 Petersburg, VA  USA aged 30 years.  John Crawford died 1869  Rocheport MO USA aged 46 years.  Hugh Crawford died 1880 aged 59 years.  He that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live.  John XI  25th."    Lair 117 C  reads,  " Jane Crawford died 1885 aged 53 years buried here.  James Crawford born 13 August 1826 died 8 July 1887 aged 60 years.  Allan Campbell Crawford born 22 April 1828 died 3rd May 1894 aged 66 years.  Jessie Crawford widow of James Crawford of Mains Hamilton born 17th December 1829 died 7th February 1912 aged 82 years.  Who so ever liveth and believeth in me/  Shall never die."

Hugh  c. 09 Dec 1821.  In 1841 was a 15 year old living with his 60 year old

(see  # 62) and back living with his mother in 1861.  The headstone at Lair C108 in Beith Cemetery reads,  " Erected by Elizabeth Orr in the memory of her husband Allan Campbell Crawford born 22 Apr 1828 died 3rd May 1894.  The above Elizabeth Orr born 27th Sep 1839  died 30th Jun 1905 and is interred in the Kew Cemetery Melbourne, Victoria, Australia."  (see  #  4)

84.James Crawford  b. 1827 Dalry and d. 23 Apr 1877 and Margaret McGown (Patrick) ( b. 1828, Bridge of Weir, Houston, Renfrewshire, d. 12 Aug 1897) married 17 Jul 1852.  Both are buried in Lair  # 69 Head Street Churchyard.  James is the son of John Crawford and Margaret Cunningham Nairn (see # 128).  In 1871 working as a tinsmith and living in a house on Main Street with one room with a window.  By 1881 Margaret is a widow living on  Townhead Street.  Her children Margaret, John, Elizabeth, Agnes and Jemima are all living with her as is her 3 year old grandson, James Crawford.

Margaret 26 Apr 1856.  In 1871 working in flax mill and in 1881 was a sandpaperer.

John  20 May 1858.  In 1871 he was living at grandfather's house and working as a

tinsmith (see # 128).  In 1881 living with mother and still a tinsmith.

Janet  16 Aug 1860.  In 1871 and 1881 living at grandfather's house (see #  128)

85.James Crawford b. 1826 Kirkmicheal (Straiton), d. Sep 1911 and Janet Gall (b. 1829 Cambuslang, Paisley, Lanarkshire , d. 21 Apr 1890)  married 02 Nov 1849.

James is the son of James Crawford and Mary Andrew  (see # 77).  James lived at Morrishill Toll and was an enginekeeper.  In 1851 James and Janet and newborn Jane were living there. James' occupation on 1861 Census is illegible, but his family was living on Eglinton Street.  In 1871 he was a 45 year old innkeeper, living on Whang Street (formerly called Eglinton).  His 14 year old brother, Robert was living with them.  Robert was born in Beith.  On the 1861 Census Janet listed her birthplace as Paisley and on the 1871 Census it was listed as Cambuslang.  In 1881 the Inn has 10 rooms with windows.  Living with James and Janet are their children, James 31, Isabella 27, Agnes 20, Margaret 18, William 16, Robert 13, and Catherine 10.  Alexander Wilson, a 19 year old servant is also living there.  James and Janet are buried in Lair B79C in Beith Cemetery.  The headstone reads, " In memory of Janet Gall wife of James Crawford, Innkeeper who died 21 Apr 1880 in her 61 year.  Also the above James Crawford who died 28 Sep 1911 in his 87 year.  Also their grandson James who died at Anderson Hotel 20 Feb 192-, -- 9 1/2 years, elder son of Robert and Agnes Crawford and the above Robert Crawford who died 28 Jan 1937 in his 69 year and his wife Agnes C. Todd who died 28 Jan 1851 in her 75 year.  Also William Crawford son of the above James Crawford and Janet Gall who died 12 Mar 1940 in his 7-th year.  Robert, youngest son of James Crawford, farmer Sidehead  12 1871  26 years.  James Crawford farmer, Sidehead 01 Jan 1874  74 years, his daughter Mary Crawford died at Ashcraig, Largs 02 Feb 1883  50 years.  His wife Mary Andrew died at Newton of Beltrees 26 Oct 1887 84 years."

07 Feb 1912)  married 22 Jul 1857.  James is the son of James Crawford and Margaret Dunlop (see # 78).  In 1851 he was living with his widowed mother on Whang Street and working as a thread manufacturer.  In 1861 he and Jessie were living on Knockhuckle Street and he was a thread manufacturer now employing 200 persons.  In 1871, still listed as JP thread manufacturer living in Manse on Hamilton Paisley Road in house with 8 rooms with windows.  Also living with them was Marion Ritchie as 23 year old servant.  In 1881 they are employing 400 persons.  They are living in the same house and their three children are living with them as well as a servant, 22 year old Janet Crawford.  In 1891 Jessie is a widow living on private means.  She is living on Roeland Road, Mainshamilton in a house with 14 rooms with windows.  Her sons James and Hugh were also living there.  James was 32, unmarried and living on "private means".  Hugh was 27 and a JP Linen thread manufacturer.  Two servants were also living there, Margaret Anderson from Coylton was cook and Margaret McCullock from Dalry  aged 20 was the maid.  The headstone at Lair C110A at Beith Cemetery reads,  " Until the day break IHS Sacred to the memory of my dear husband James Crawford of Mainshamilton who died 08 July 1887 aged 60 years and of Jessie Crawford widow of James Crawford of Mainshamilton who died 07 Feb 1912 age 82 and of our son James Crawford who died 14 Jun 1905 aged 47 years.  Also their younger son Hugh Crawford who died 05 Aug 1917 age 53."  James also owned Lair  # 132 at Head Street Churchyard, but no one is listed as buried there.

125.John Crawford  b. 1799  d. 16 Nov 1870 and Mary Neilston (b. 1801  d. 02 Apr 1884) married  10 Jun 1822.  Both John and Mary were born in Beith as were all their children.  On their marriage record, the baptismal records of their children and the 1841 Census, John's occupation is listed as a flesher.  They lived on Main Street.  Their children Jeanie 15, Hugh 15, Elizabeth 10, Janet 10, John 9, William 7, James 5 and Mary 1 were living with them.  In 1851 John listed his occupation as a spirit dealer as well as flesher.  Living at home were their children, Hugh 26, Elizabeth 23, John 19, William 17, Mary 11, and Barbara 8.  The headstone  # 10 in the Head Street Churchyard reads,  " In memory of John Crawford, Johnshill, Lochwinnock who died 16 Nov 1870 aged 71 years, also his son Andrew who died in infancy.  Mary Neilson relict of John Crawford who died at Neilson Villa Saltcoats 2 April 1884 age 83 years 6 months.  Annie Crawford their grandaughter who died at Johnshill, Lochwinnock 8 Sep 1874 age 8 years.  Barbara Crawford their daughter who died at Potterell's Farm, Hatfield, England 22 Mar 1885, 43 years."

126.John Crawford b. 28 Jul 1805 in Paisley (Low Parish), d. 13 Jun 1888 and Janet Rodger (b. 1808 in Beith  d. 24 Apr 1877) married 18 Oct 1824.  John is the son of John Crawford and Elizabeth Stewart (see  #  120).  Janet is the daughter of Robert Rodger and Agnes Anderson.  In 1841 John  was a weaver and Janet a silk embroiderer.  Their children Robert 14, James 12, Agnes 7, William 4, and Thomas 2, were living with them.  Their 15 year old son, John, was living with his grandfather Robert Rodger and working as a wright's apprentice.

In 1841, 1851 and 1871 they lived on Whang Street.  In 1851 John was a 43 year old cotton handloom weaver and Janet did not list an occupation.  Their children William 14, Thomas 12, Gavin 10, Elizabeth 7 and 2 month old Hugh were living with them, as well as Janet's widowed mother, Agnes Rodger, age 70.  Agnes Anderson Rodger was born in about 1781 and the 1841 Census indicates that she was not born in the parish of Beith.  In 1861 John and Janet lived on Eglinton Street.  John was a worsted weaver and Janet's mother was no longer living with them.  Their children living with them were Thomas 22, Gavin 20, Elizabeth 17 and Hugh 10.  In 1871 John was an engine keeper.  Their house at 105 Whang Street had one room with a window.  Living at home were their 27 year old daughter Elizabeth who was working as a general servant, their 20 year old son Hugh who was working as a joiner and a grandchild, 1 year old Hugh Speir.  Janet died 20 Apr 1877 at Whang Street in Beith from " dropsy of several months".  Her son Hugh was the informant on the death certificate.  At the time of her death, John was a grocer's porter.  In 1881, John was living alone on Townhead Street in a house with one room with a window,  He was 76 years old and working as a watchman.  John died 11 Jun 1888 at Boghead Street, Beith from "general debility of age".  His son James was the informant on the death certificate.  Both John and Janet are buried in Lair  # 134 at the Head Street Churchyard, Beith.

128.John Crawford  b. 1806 in Dalry and Margaret Cunningham Nairn ( b. 1811 in  Stewarton ( listed as Stevenson in 1861) , d. 27 Mar 1893, buried Lair #  69 Head Street Churchyard.  On the 1827 and 1830 baptismal records of his children, John listed his occupation as a barber.  In 1841 John was a hairdresser and living on Cross Street.  Living with him were Margaret 30, James 13, John 11, Elizabeth 9, Margaret 5, Andrew 3 and Janet 5 months.  In 1851 he was living on Buns Wynd, still a haircutter and barber.  Living with him were Margaret 44, James 23, John 21, Andrew 13, Janet 10, Joseph 8, Robert 6, and William 4.  In 1861 Margaret was a 53 year old widow.  She was then a haircutter and still living on Buns Wynd.  In 1871 she listed no occupation but was living in the same house with her sons, 23 year old William who was working as a shoemaker, and 18 year old Alexander who was working as a blacksmith.  Two grandchildren (James' children were also living there, 12 year old John Crawford who was  working as a tinsmith and 10 year old Janet Crawford who was a scholar.  In 1881 Margaret was 75 and still working as a barberess and living at 8 Buns Wynd in a house that had one room with a window.  Her son Joseph was living there as were three grandchildren: John Crawford 17, who was working as a typeprinter-compositor (born in Johnstone, Renfrew, he might be the son of Robert Crawford and Barbara Jamieson see # 182), Janet Crawford 20, b. Beith (daughter of William and his deceased wife Janet  see # 239) who was working at Barmill Thread Works, and Andrew Crawford 12, who was born in Johnstone, Renfrew.  In 1891 Margaret lists her age as 87 and is still living at 8 Buns wynd.  Two grandsons, both named John Crawford, are living with her.  One John is 27 years old, born in Johnstone and working as a cabinet machine man, the other John is 22, born in Beith and working as a blacksmith ( this John might be the son of William Crawford and Janet Murray  see # 239).

In 1851 they were living at New Gurdies.  John's 22 year old brother , James who was also born in New Monkland was living with them.  Both John and James were working at the iron works.  In 1861 John and Jean were living at Lauber Farm working 84 acres.  James was no longer living with them.  Instead, living with them were John's 36 year old sister-in-law, Janet Miller, a dress maker born in Dalry, and John's brother Robert Crawford, an 18year old salesman also born in New Monkland.  Jean Smith a 25 year old from Glasgow was working as a dairymaid and a 9 year old girl from Dalry was also living there as ---- b.--- possibly Alice Allan, sister?  On the 1861 Census John and his brother both list their birthplace as Muirland in Lanarkshire.  In 1881 John and Jean are farming 80 acres at Longbar Farm.   Two girls from Dalry work and live there;  John's niece, Elizabeth Allan 32 and Catherine Cochran 21.  In 1891 John is 68 and widowed.  His niece from Johnstone, Jessie Crawford 29 is keeping house and Catherine Cocherane is still working there.

     John may  be the son of John Crawford and Mary Neilston  (see  # 125).  In 1871

John was a farmer of 83 acres of arable land.  Living with him were his wife Mary 31, daughters Jean 4, and Mary 2, and John's brother William 38.  William was unmarried and a horse dealer.   Three servants were also living there; 22 year old Jean Andrew b. Dalry, 20 year old John Stewart b. Aberdeenshire, and 19 year old Robert Bruster b. Wigtonshire.  In 1881 John and Mary were farming at Manrahead 729 acres, arable.  John was also a horse dealer.  The house has 7 rooms with windows.  Living with them are their children, John (16), Jane(14), David(9), Elizabeth (7) and William (4)  with  John's brother, William aged 47 who assists John on the farm and three farm servants.  In 1891 John and Mary are still farming at Manrahead.  Their house now has 11 rooms with windows.  John also does horse dealing.  Living at home are Jeanie 24, Lizzie 17, and William 14.  Their servants are Martha Young 20 from Galston, Alex Liddell 18 from Sterling and Peter Beatown 38 a deaf mute from Pollockshaws  ( also see # 183 and # 142).  The headstone in Head Street Churchyard reads,  " In memory of John Crawford who died at Manrahead 03 Mar 1899 age 68 and his daughter Mary who died 08 Feb 1879 aged 9 years and 11 months and of his wife Mary Kerr who died at 45 Ayt-un (?) Road Pollockshaws on 10 Feb 1911 age 71 years."

14  Jul 1909)  married 02 Jul 1867.  John is the son of Hugh Crawford and Margaret Gibson   (see # 59).  He is the grandson of John Crawford and Elizabeth Stevens  (see # 119).  In 1871 John was a 32 year old draper.  They were living on Whang Street in a house that had 7 rooms with windows, with their 1 year old daughter Margaret, and a servant, 18 year old Mary Wallace who was born in Kilbirnie.  In 1881 John is still working as a draper and clothier.  They live on New Street in a house with 9 rooms with windows and their children, Margaret 11, Hugh 9, Barbara 2, and Jane 2 months, and Margaret Adam 17, servant from Dalry.  In 1891 they are still living on New Street, Hugh 19 is helping his father in the draper-clothier business, Maggie 21, Barbara 12, Jane 10 and John 6 are also living at home.  Mary Lindsay 19 from Paisley is working as their servant.

152.Johnston Crawford  b. 1806  and Stevenson Faulds  (b. 1806)  married 1825.  Johnston might be the son of Thomas Crawford and Isbel Johnstine  (see  # 194).  In 1841 Johnstone was a cotton handloom weaver living on New Street with his wife, children, Helen 15, George 13, twins Thomas 9 and Robert 9, John 7 and another Thomas 11.   Johnstone died between 1847 and 1851.  In 1851 the 46 year old widowed Stevenson was working as a sewer of muslin.  Living with her were her children, James 19, John 17,  Jane 9, and Anne 3.  Stevenson doesn't appear in the 1861 Census in Beith.  In 1871 Stevenson was a 67 year old widow working as a silksewer and living on Buns wynd in a house with one room with a window, with her daughter Ann White Crawford 22, silksewer.

173.Robert Crawford  b. 1796  and Elizabeth Pollock ( b. 1811) married 22 Feb 1834.  From 1834 to 1843 Robert was a brushmaker.  On the 1847 baptismal records of his second son John, he listed his occupation as threadmaker.  On the 1850 baptismal record of the third son , John, Robert was a labourer.  In 1841 Robert was a printer and Elizabeth was a Q sewer.  They were living on Clayholes Street with their children Robert 6, William 4, Jean 2, and John 3 months.  In 1851 he was a 60 years old and listed no occupation and Elizabeth 44 was a sewer of muslin.  Living with them were their children Robert 16, William 14, David 7, and John 7 months.  In 1861 Robert was a 69 year old "Chelsea pensioner" and Elizabeth was an embroiderer.  They were living on Clayholes Street with David 18 and John 10.  In 1871 Elizabeth was a widow working as an embroiderer and still living on Clayholes.  Her 36 year old son Robert is living with her

176.     Robert Crawford  b. 1816  and Janet Law ( b. 1815, Kilbirnie) married 11 Jun 1844.  At the time of his marriage Robert was a printer in Beith.  Robert listed his occupation as merchant on the 1845 birth record of his son Thomas.  In 1851 Robert was a cloth merchant living on Main Street with his wife and son Thomas 5, and Janet's three brothers, Robert Law 23 a  joiner, James Law 21 a silk printer and John Law  18 an assistant salesman, as well as Janet's sister Mary Law 26 an assistant salesgirl, and Ann Grant 3, niece.  The in-laws were all born in Kilbirnie except for John who was born in Rothsay, Bute.  Also living there was an uncle, 80 year old retired cotton weaver, Robert Crawford and a cousin 49 year old Jean Gibson who was working as house servant.  Both were from Beith.  In 1861 Robert and Janet were living on Cross Street and he was working as a draper and printer.  Jean Gibson ( b. Lochwinnock)  was still living with them as were his sons Thomas 15 and James 4.    Might be the same Robert as  # 180 or # 181.

( age? unmarried) were living with him.  Janet was working in the draper's shop.  Might be the same as # 176 or # 180.

 

 

182.Robert Crawford b. 1845  and Barbara Jamieson ( b. 1848 d. 20 Nov 1919 and buried in Lair  # 10 Head Street Churchyard).  They were married 16 Jun 1868.  Robert might be the son of John Crawford and Margaret Cunningham Nairn  ( see # 128).  In 1881 Robert was a baker in Stevenson living with Barbara and their children Rachael 11, Mary 9, Robert 7, and Maggie 1.  In 1891 living on the Cross in a house with 2 rooms with windows and working as a baker.  Besides their 5 children, their grandchild, Barbara J. Crawford (b. 1899) was also living there.  The headstone at the Head Street Churchyard reads,  " Erected by Robert and Barbara Crawford  in affectionate remembrance of their eldest son John who was accidentally killed on the 21 May 1890 in the 25th year of his age, also of their daughter Rachael, wife of Daniel Wilson who died 25 June 1909 aged 72 years and Barbara Jamieson his wife died 20 November 1919 aged 73 years, their son Robert died 22 Dec 1952 aged 80."

Crawford.

Rachael   c. 03 May 1871, Irvine, Ayr.  In 1881 working as      a tailoress.  She married (1) James Kay, marine engineer    and (2) Archibald Walker, civil servant.  She died 29 Nov         1960 at 15 Millbrae Crescent, Clydebank.  The death was registered  by her daughter J. Walker.

Janet Rodger  c. 24 May Irvine, Ayr.  In 1881 working as a fishing          tackle maker.  She married Donald McLeod, fishing tackle manufacturer.  She died a widow on  27 Dec 1950  aged 77     at Lynemilns Nursing Home.  Her niece J. Baker registered           the death.

263.     Margaret Crawford  b. 1799.  In 1861 living alone on New Street and was a

threadworker.

 

264.     Marion Crawford  b. 1791.  In 1841 living on Whang Street and working as a

reeler.  Living with her was James Ritchie a 20 year old commercial traveller.  In 1851 Marion was 60 years old, unmarried, and living alone in the house.  Living in  next door to her were Elizabeth , Hugh and Marion Crawford on Whang Street.  She was working as a knitter and sewer.  On the other side lived the widow Jane Crawford and her children  ( See # 10 and # 59).

 

265.     Martha Crawford b. 1806.  Martha was the widow of William Gibson, a

labourer in Beith.  At the time of their marriage in 1831, William was a quarrier in Gateside.  In 1851 she was a widow working as a cotton sewer.  Living with her were her unmarried children  19 year old Janet Gibson who was working as a flax thread reeler, 16 year old John Gibson, a cotton handloom weaver, and 13 year old Margaret Gibson who was working as a cotton sewer  (see # 59).

 

266.     Mary Crawford  b. 1794.  In 1871 she was listed as the grandmother working as

a skinster and living in the house of Robert Craig 39, a harness weaver, on Clayhole Street.  Also living there were Robert's wife Marion Craig 39, a sewer, and their children Mary 14 harness weaver, Jane 12 skinster, John 9, Margaret 4, William 3, and Marion 1  (see #  248).

 

267.     Mary Crawford  b. 1811.  In 1841 Mary was a widow working as a Q sewer and

living in Backburn.  In 1861 and 1871 she is till living at Backburn and sewing

( see # 268)

 

268.     Mary Crawford b. 1811.  In 1881 she was living alone at 52 Main Street in a

house with one room and a window, and working as a charwoman.  Might be the same as  (# 267)

 

269.     Mary Crawford  b. 1803 in Campsie, Stirlingshire.  In 1861 she was  widow

making caps and living on Newton Street.        

 

270.     Mary Crawford  b. 1809.  In 1881 she was a 72 year old widow living alone in Backburn on  New Street and working as a housekeeper.

 

271.     Mary Crawford  b. 1850.  In 1891 she was a widow and working as a glass

laperer.  Her daughter Agnes was living with her and working as a shop girl.  They were both boarders in the house of Elizabeth Wilson ( b. 1831) at 30 Wilson Street, a house with 2 rooms with windows.

 

272.     Mary Crawford  b. 1854.  In 1891 she was an unmarried thread finisher living

alone at 49 Bundswynd, a house with one room with a window.

 

273.     Susan (?) Crawford  b. 1805.  In 1861 she was a widow doing sewing and living

on New Street.

C50     Erected by Mr and Mrs James Wylie, Gateside in memory of his 1st wife Jeanie Crawford who died 12 July 1883 age 54 years.  The above James Wylie who died 11 th June 1898  75 years. 

 

C107a  In memory of Margaret Crawford wife of John Miller Morison, surgeon, who died 30 July 1867.

 

C136   Erected by Samuel Kerr in Memory of Ann McGill his beloved wife who died 21 May 1869 in the 36 year of her age.  Also their son William McGill Kerr who died 6th Dec 1866 age 10 months and their son William who died 31 Aug 1899 age 31 years and their son John who died 1st January 1904 aged 41 years.  Also their daughter Jessie McGill who died 19th Dec 1904 aged 20 years.  The above Samuel Kerr died 14 June 1906 in his 78 year.  His second wife Ann Crawford who died 23rd May 1910 in her 63 year.  Their son Alexander Crawford who died 25 Oct 1918 aged 39 years.  Their son Robert James died 19 Apr 1886 aged 4 years.

 

D211   Erected to the memory of Thomas Kennedy who died at Nettlehirst Farm, Beith  4 Dec 1914 in his 65 year and his wife Isabella Crawford who died at Nycobank 20 Dec 1937 / 85 years.

 

D87     In loving memory of our dear father James Kerr who died on 23 July 1911 age 56 years and our dear mother Jeannie Crawford who died 18 Mar 1915 aged 65 years.

 

E297    In remembrance of Mary Crawford wife of Robert Allan,  Southridgehill who died 22 Jan 1932 in her 74 year.  And of the said Robert Allan.
