I don't
know if you can help me but I am looking for a friend whom I lost touch
with many years ago. Her name is Thelma Scott and she grew up at 24 Myrtle
Bank, Beith. She has a sister Leslie who married John Hastie. I do not
remember where they lived although it was not in Beith. Thelma would be
about 45 years old now. She went to catering school in Glasgow and I met
her while we were both working in the Post House Hotel in Aviemore. I do
not know if she is married. I last had a card from her which was postmarked
from London but she forgot to put on a return address. She had a friend
named James I think whose parents owned the local hotel. I realize this is
not much to go on but maybe someone will recognize the name and know how I
can get in touch with her. My name is Nancy Fortune and I live in Ontario,
Canada. P.O. Box 611 Barry's Bay, Ontario, Canada K0J 1B0 Thanks in advance
for any help you can give me. |

Am enjoying website relative to Beith,
Ayrshire, Scotland, found on a Google search. This was as a result of
finding out that my Gt Gt Grandparents-David Cunningham and Janet
Stevenson were married at Beith on 19th December, 1846.
They subsequently emigrated to New Zealand to
participate in a rural developement scheme, on the "Helenslee", sailing
from Glasgow in 1864, taking four children with them, another was born on
the voyage and a sixth child-my Gt Grandfather was born in New Zealand.
I am about to commence research in respect of
where they lived and what he worked at, prior to emigration. I would also
like to ascertain details of their parentage and if any descendants of
relatives remain in the area today.
Any direction or advise as to local
repositories of archives would be very much appreciated. Also, if you are
interested in any further information, please contacted
me.....................

I was
interested to read of connections to the Lockharts of Beith. I lived at 44
Wilson St. with my grandparents who inherited the cottage from my
grandfathers uncle, William Christie, who married Minah Lockhart, who was
the daughter of William and Margaret Lockhart. I don't have specific
dates, but my grandparents moved into the cottage round-about the late 40's
when Minah and her new husband emigrated to Canada. Number 44 was
demolished in 1977. |

Hello everyone my name is . I am an American citizen who used to live in Beith in 1977-78. I was only 15-16 at the time. My family lived there for a year and a half in a cottage on some farm that was 15 minute walking distance to the town. I remember walking across the fields, from the cottage, till i came to an intersection of the road that went around in a complete circle, and when i walked to my first right turn off the circle it lead into Beith. This road led right into the town of Beith and went through it. I remember meeting a lot of the children around my age then and becoming friends and playmates with them. I had a different culture and country upbringing than the local folks. Even though we spoke english it was still different. I remember just getting along with everyone, and still being accepted, and not being treated differently because of where i was from. My one BEST friend at that time was a guy named William Copeland who i believe now to be a police constable in that area . My email is RHinspects@aol.com if any one from that time can contact me about this town i remember. |

While researching William Pollock, I came across your truly wonderful
town's site. It is a bit more than engaging. The furniture industry of
Beith was such a vital part of your heritage. There is even a main
street named Balfour. I became intrigued from watching an episode of
Antiques Roadshow, where Mr. Pollock was mentioned -- attributed to a
fine piece being appraised.
For your review, an interesting account:
I am curious as to what happened to those manufacturing buildings. All
gone now? It would sure be a tragic loss...
The furniture industry in the US has gone through drastic changes, most
not for the better. I collect antiques and have been researching how to
re-establish/re-create fine products produced in the 18th and 19th
centuries. My dream would be to visit your town and see the progress of
your restorations. I hope you are receiving assistance from Princeton
and others in our country. Thanks for developing such an engaging site
with fascinating details. |

Just in case you are in any way interested - I
have set up a website to try and promote the uptake of ADSL broadband in
Beith. The website gives some basic information on the technology and also
tells people how to sign up to get Beith finally connected to a decent net
connection. The site is totally off my own back - it is not commercial and
there is no advertising/popups. It is also free of any swearing or
anything unsuitable for kids. If you would like to link to it or recommend
it to anyone then it would be a great help in getting decent internet in
the town. |

I came across your
site a few days ago and enjoyed it very much, I am reminded by Ritchie
Scotty Brown that I did know him when we attended Beith Academy old school
1936 to 39, my mother used to buy clothes for me in his mothers shop.
I was born in 1931 and lived my early life at 1 Mains Road, later moving to
Mid Road and then to Beech Avenue.
I think I may know some of the other beithites, but after national service
1952 to 54, I came to work in London, returning to Beith to get married in
1956 to Freda Nelson. We then went off to Nigeria until 1963. Work was
still scarce for me and I worked in Manchester
to 1965, then to London where I have lived and worked to date.
It must be a sign of age, but I was so pleased to read the information from
your correspondents, a journey through nostalgia, and was so disappointed
to see the state of the old historic buildings in the Town.
I am no sure if there any members of the class of 1936 when I started
school or 1946 when I left to start work, but if there are, I would be
pleased to hear from them.
Keep up the good work and hope the restoration works are successful.
As an ex beithite I came across your page quite by chance and tried to
leave my email address, to receive any future items of interest.

Iain, thank you for providing a web
site of Beith, I lived in Beith for 18mths from sept 1979 till April 1981,
during that time I discovered my family history, boy it brought home to me
a feeling of pride, which when I explain to my family has been hard to
understand with NZ been such a young country with little Celtic history. I
have many relations in Beith: Tom Nixon his sons Steven, David, my late
grandfather John Macdonald Nixon, my grannie Jane Johnstone, late aunt /
uncle Nan & Bobby Ferguson the list goes on & on. I worked in a tavern,
called the Coachhouse ? or the Stable, owned by a lady called Mrs Pink, she
had a daughter called Nikki. Many a night was spent taking Gran to the
bingo in Johnstone, Paisley, Kilbirine, eating fish suppers, rolls fresh
from the bakers, collecting CO-OP stamps, watching Beith Juniors with my
great uncle Alec, sometimes he'd slip me a couple of pound for a pint or
two of Heavy, mind you I quite liked Tennents Lager, especially the cans
with pictures of lovely lassies on them. Again Thank You from a KIWI born
Scot. John Nixon son of David Johnstone Macdonald Nixon who was born in
Kilwinning Ayrshire in 1936. |

Hello From Canada; I just came
across the Beith Web site and thought I would say Hello. My wife comes from
your beautiful town of Beith. We were married in Beith High Church on Sep
26th 1970. I was in the Canadain Forces in Germany at the time and after
our wedding we moved back to Canada. We have visited Beith many times since
then and are planning a trip for next Aug 2003. My wife's maiden name was
Dorothy Scott Wallace, she lived up at 6 Larch Terrace at the time, we're
not sure who lives there now, her mother passed away in 1991, before that
she lived on Montgomery Ave. Dorothy's sister Georgia Parker still lives
down the street at 44 Meadowside . The rest of her brothers and sisters
still live in other parts of Scotland, but not too far from Beith. It sure
was interesting to read about the work you are doing to restore the old
Beith and we wish you the best of luck in your restorations. We will inteed
visit Beith next year and go and see your old town. Drop us a line if the
time permits Gordon and Dorothy Gillis In Gillisdale Cape Breton Nova

Hello, I am just starting a family tree and came across your great
site about beithites.Iam not from Beith I live in Adrossan until the age of

Kilpatrick was from Beith and was a member of the Beith Harriers at one
time, her mother was Janet Anderson Kilpatrick my mother had two brother

remember having to take a bus from Adrossan ,I would get of on a main
street then walk up a hill past a big church to get to my granny's place
Wardrope Terrace seems to stick in my mind, there was also a large quarry
behind her house and a main highway nearby if anyone can release my
memories i would love to hear from you. thanks |

Hi, My Name is Cameron Murray, I have lived in
the Manrahead estate in Beith for nearly 5 years now. I have just visited
your website and found it very interesting. It is amazing how you can stay
somewhere and not really know about the background of it. My
Grandfather used to work in Langs engineering before it shut and he was
made redundant. My Mother & Father got engaged in the Old Beith Picture
House. My Dad used to take us to Tommy's Barbers in Beith to get our hair
cut on a Saturday morning. I am married now to Jane and as I say, we have
lived in Beith for nearly 5 years and love it. Keep up the good work with
the website. |

I have
just returned from a visit to Beith to see my sister. Many aspects of the
town as it is now left me with a feeling of disappointment. The state of
the buildings between the Post Office and the Strand.
The demolition of the Primary part of Beith
Academy.
The young people who have made the "wee folly"
a drinking place both during the day and at night and the litter of beer
cans and bottles that they leave behind. The general lack of life in the
town; I remember that the main street always used to be full of shoppers.
But I suppose that they all go out of town to the bigger supermarkets now.
Also the closure of the cabinet works has decimated the town with little if
any real work places left. The old
manse gardens at the corner of Glebe and Dalry Roads are totally overgrown.
I presume that it is only a matter of time before this area is developed
for housing. "Harkness's" garage in Eglinton Street is an unsightly area
now that the petrol station has been demolished
Perhaps my memories of the old town are a bit
rose coloured, but the feeling of disappointment is hard to take.
On a positive note, the rest of the town
appears to be clean and tidy and the people seem to be thriving. Regardless
of how the town looks, it is still 'home' to me. |

Now, before we
proceed, I should explain that my spelling is not to be considered
incorrect but rather as a mark of individuality, artistic creativity,
free-thinking, originality and all else complimentary but never as
incorrect. :-) D is for dyslexic not daft. Spell check only works with me
for some words, which, on examination, I can see as being unconventional in
their letter positioning, shall we say. I was advised by my sister,
Anne Close, that the best campsite in Scotland is at Beith in Ayrshire. It
is many years since she and her family camped there but she is certain that
it was called Muirfield. It was then for tents only. I have searched
the web directories on campsites in Scotland, even narrowed the search to
Ayrshire, but to no avail. Do you, by any chance know where in relation to
Beith it lies and, better still, do you have a name for the owner and
perhaps a phone number? I'd love to find it but Muirfield may be the
wrong name. As I said, it is some years since they've been there. It will
be so much appreciated if anyone on your site knows of the campsite I'm
seeking and how kind of you to have gone to the trouble of searching the
phone books. I really did not expect you to go to so much bother for me.
Apparently it was "an old hippie" (my sister's phrase not mine) who ran it
and it sounded wonderful. My sister tells me that the owner of this
particular site arranged communal bonfires in the evenings, encouraging a
great, friendly atmosphere between the campers. So many sites are
impersonal with all campers doing there own thing, so to speak. On my
web search, I did find a campsite in Ayrshire called Middlemuir but that is
near to Tarbolton, which, if I remember correctly, is nowhere near Beith,
however, I could well be very wrong on my geography. Does Middlemuir ring
any bells with you? Anyway, thank you so much for going to this
bother for me. it is very much appreciated |

We are very
interested in finding out about the renovation project of Rev.
Witherspoon's home. The last time I heard from Robert McCallum, he said
that the project was to begin in April. We would like an update on the
project. I was wondering if you could help me get some information from
Beith. We have a tape of part one of " The Making of a Statue", which
is Sandy Stoddarts statue of Rev. John Witherspoon. My whole family went to
the dedication of the statue at Princeton University last fall. We met the
camera crew that was filming for the second part of the tape, but I did not
get the name of the company or their address. I watched the tape again the
other day and it did not have any credits on it. Would it be possible for
you to find out the name of the company and their address so I could
contact them. I would like to purchase the second part of the tape
for our family. |

Hey all you Beithites
I was in your lovely wee town on the 22nd and 23rd of May. I brought my
grandson to visit and we spent two nights in Mary Elliott's bed and
breakfast and we had a lovely time. It was raining most of the time ( the
usual) but my grandson Gabriel still said I love it!!!! We walked along the
main street around lunch time and stopped in at Irvines for a pie DELICIOUS
Gabriel's first pie!!!!!! We were back the next day for more of the same.
He went out walking by himself one evening and he met two young girls and
he talked to them but didn't get their names. He met them at the bottom of
Glebe rd so if anyone reads this who know anything about two young girls
meeting an american boy who was visiting Beith with his Granny please
E-mail me with any info he would like to get in touch with them. Thank you
for a wonderful time in Beith. A Kilbirnie lassie! |

I am trying to
contact an old friend of mine. His name is Eric Anderson. He will be in
his mid 50s now. I believe his wife's name was Ann and the had a son and
daughter, who will probably be close to 30 by now.
Eric and I did karate together at the Bellahouston sports centre in
Glasgow. Eric lost his left arm when he was a young man.
We trained together for several years, I was a black belt, and then we lost
touch.
I will be staying in Beith for the month of August, visiting my brother.
His address is 34 Lancaster Avenue, Beith, KA15 1AR.
If there is any way that you can find Eric for me, I would really
appreciate it. Thanks for trying
to help me, but I don't know what district he lived in.
I only know that he was in the Police a long time ago, and had to leave
when he lost his arm, but I don't suppose that helps you any |

Hugh Pattison |
Hello. I live
in White Rock, British Columbia,Canada, I am 81 years old and a Great
Grandfather. Jake is going on six, and Kiannah is almost two and a half. We
have been doing research into the Pattison family, and have come to a
standstill for the moment. My GGG Grandfather, James was born in Beith
about 1750-1760, married Elizabeth Smith, also from Beith, that's as far
back as we can go at present. My GG Grandfather, William, also born in
Beith in 1781, married Jean Harvie September 15th, 1815 in Beith. He passed
away December 11, 1873 in Kelburne Street ??. My Great Grandfather.
Richard, also born in Beith June 6, 1819 in Belgray ?? died in Burnhouse
April 20, 1876. My Grandfather, Robert, was born in Neilston and was
married to Isabella McDougall. They built the Whitehouse Cottage in Beith,
while it was under construction or renovation, the whole family lived in
Caldwell Tower. I have much more, but that is enough for now, if anyone can
add to this, it would be much appreciated. Names like Belgray, Boghouse,
Burnhouse, what are they? I also have a copy of an agreement that was
signed by Alex Love, Writer, Beith. Thank you so muchand all the best to
everyone. |

Hugh
Ferguson |
Just had a call
from my sister in Beith to tell me of the passing of John Boyd Smith late
of Smith Bros. Construction and boss to so many apprentices at the building
trade of Bricklayer and Mason. I had the the experience of serving my time
with Smith Bros. as a Mason and worked with Johnny McLeish, Rab Black, and
Davey Calderwood, who was our labourer. I remember Davey would send me to
Willie Doctors on a Saturday morning, when I went to the bakehouse
(Ferguson's of course) to get the meat pies, and I would by him 12 clay
pipes for 1 shilling. When I got back he would take one of the pipes and
crack the stem putting the broken off piece in his waistcoat pocket to use
as chalk and smoked the cut down pipe.
I believe John Boyd Smiths greatest delight had to be his association with
the B.B.'s. When he returned from the Forces, he had been a Staff/Sergeant
in the R.A.F Regiment, He came to the firm and he along with his cousin
Robert began to run things as David gradually gave way to these younger
men.Johns first love, the B>B> led to him becoming Captain and he
reinstituted the summer camps, beginning with Croy Shore, I believe in 1946
or 1947. He had a profound effect on the lives of many men from Beith, as
the Brigade was the centre of social and religious life back then with
over 100 boys in the Company. I feel John's connection with the B.B. is a
subject for Ron Reid and perhaps a book or at least a few chapters within a
subsequent publication might be appropriate. I can still remember at the
close of the meetings on Friday nights ,the whole company standing with a
hand on the boy next's shoulder and being led by Cap. John Boyd Smith in
that well known benediction, "The Lord watch between me and thee while we
are absent, one from another" Amen.
May he rest in Peace. |

Den Candlin |
I have been thinking of my old friends whom i have not seen for some 45
years. This morning I came across a couple of old Spierian magazines
which prompted me to put my browser to work. Hey presto! I found the
Beithies site.I am really impressed - but things have really changed
since I last saw Beith.
My name is Denis Candlin and my association with Beith started in 1952/3
when I went to Spiers School. We had lived in Glengarnock and Kilbirnie
before that and moved to Neilston in 1953. I continued going to Spiers,
travelling by train via Lugton.
My best friend there was Alan McLean (Barrhead) and Sandy Gemmell (Lugton).
Also min the same class was Ian Buchanan(Beith), Arthur Matthews(Beith),
James Blyth (Kilbirnie), Sandra Arnott (Glengarnock), Rene Martin (Kilbirnie).
Some of the teachers at that time were KatieGardner (geography), Joey
Brown (maths), Miss Weir - wee petite (french), James (big hippo) Clark
(history), Dicky Bone (Sport & Gymnastics), James Rae (art), Tom Caine
(technical subjects) and Robert Fairley was the Rector.
I left Spiers in January 1957 to live in Brisbane Australia. I returned
for a short holiday in 1992 to find that Spiers had been leveled to the
ground. I am now 62 years of age and have moved around a bit, but now
have retired and settled in Brisbane Australia. I would like to make
contact with any of my old school friends if possible. My E-Mail address
is: dgcandlin@bigpond.com If
anyone knows any other relative sites I would appreciate knowing about
them. Thank you once again

I have just returned from Beith,Scotland, and had the mis-fortune of
being in Beith on a holiday, I am very much interested in the old old
church that stands there all fenced in, we took pictures from the
outside, my ancesters have a house still standing and there used to be a
castle there near Dalry, the name is Giffen, I also heard that in that
old church there is supposed to be a "Giffen" gallery, I would love to
know what records are there and if there is any of the Giffens registered
in those churches. I would appreciate news from anyone, or an address to
write to , so that I might find out about it. my ancesters came from
Kintyre, but our history book tells of Beith and Dalry, We were
fortunate enough to find the Giffen House, now occupoed by Mr. Stewart,
my ggg-grandfather was born in Scotland and came to america in 1777, he
was Robert , (wife) Mary Bane, both born in Scotland. I am 82 years old
and not very experienced on the internet. I do hope you can help me.

We have recently discovered that my gg
grandfather William Thomson was born in Beith to William Thomson and Jean
Brown in 1817. It stated on his birth extract from the parish records
that William Thomson was a weaver in Whang. What or where is Whang? We
thought it might be an abbreviation for Whanghead as there seems to be a
few 'heads' mentioned. Could this be true. Other children were James
1813, George 1815 and Jean 1820. We have been trying to find our roots for
30 years and would be grateful for any information concerning this family,
especially a full extract of any of these births. We are unsure of what
church they would have been registered in. We know there were at least 5
churches in Beith at the time. William Jnr joined the 25th regiment of
foot in Glasgow in 1835 and arrived in Australia in 1845 with the 11th
regiment. |

I wonderd if you could help me - We have a Beithcraft Ltd. wadrobe that
we would like to sell and we came across your site whilst researching
the wadrobe!
Since they are no longer manufactured it would be lovely to sell it on
to somebody from Beith whom would be interested and would obviously take
more care of it.
It is a double wadrobe with clubfeet, do you think anybody may be
interested!

I don't know if you can help me or not but here goes, I am finally going
to make it back to Beith with my son for a holiday after nearly 37 years
in Australia and I am desperate to find an old childhood friend, his
name is Ian Hamilton and he would be in his mid forties and lived in
Mains Rd when I left Beith in 1965.
His dad worked for Thomsons T.V.repairs and his sister was named Sheena,
any information at all would be greatly appreciated, I'd hate to travel
all that way and not see him. In no small way your web site influenced
me to come back.
Can,t thank you enough Ian,I found him. Must buy you a beer in August.

This is just a quickie and I will contribute more later I left in 1971 and

Louise
Freeman |
My name was Louie King from Kilbirnie and I
knew and played with Sheila Ferguson when I visited my Auntie Sadie Hay who
lived in Wardrope Street. I already E-mailed you with the story of my
different connections with Beith.I will continue to check in occasionally .
My name is Louise Freeman maiden name King .My mother came from Beith
Hannah Strain the family lived in Wardrope terrace and even when I was a
child some of the family still lived there . I spent a lot of time in this
street as my Mother and her sister Sadie were very close and we visited
them every week. When I was 15 years old I went to work at "the Beith Co"
the grocery store on the narrowest part of Main St. I met a boy called John
Brandon who was an apprentice baker at Tommy Patterson's bakery . WE
married some years later and in 1968 we came to Rockford ILL to live close
to his sister Margaret and family. My wee sister Sadie married Jim Coll and
she has lived in Beith for over 40years.Jim writes the column in the
Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald. I still keep in close contact with my
relatives in Beith-the Brandon's and my cousins. I was raised in KIlbirnie
but my life has had great connections with Beith .I expect to be in Beith
In May of this year when I will be bringing one of my grandson's over to
visit our country of origin. He is so excited about our great adventure.
This is a wonderful site my thanks and God's blessing on all concerned with
keeping it going |
