NEWS ITEMS

CITIZEN OF YEAR

At the meeting of Beith and District Community Council held on 30 November, the issue of the Citizen of the Year 2003/2004 was discussed. It was gratifying that no fewer than seven individuals and two organisations were nominated by local people for this accolade. The letters pf nomination were read out and discussed and it was a very difficult decision for the community council members to make. But in the end it was agreed that the Citizen of the Year 2003 be awarded to local butcher, Sandy Blackwood. Sandy has been involved in the sport of swimming for many years and was himself an excellent competitive swimmer. However, it was in the field of coaching young people that he has excelled and his contribution to swimming resulted in him receiving a national coaching award earlier in 2003. Sandy is one of the top coaches in the UK. He is also chair of Beith Town Centre Initiative. He was at the helm when they organised the highly successful late night shopping event last year. He is spearheading the team working towards the 2003 event scheduled for Friday, 5 December. Married to Marie, he has one daughter Sarah and two sons, Matthew and Jamie. Sandy will receive his award at a cheese and wine evening to he held in Beith Community Centre on Friday 21 November at 7.30 pm for 8.00 pm start. Tickets are £4 and available from Blackwood Butcher, Main Street or from any Community Council member. Everyone will join in congratulating Sandy on receiving this well deserved local accolade.

JAMES JENNINGS

Last week ex Councillor James Jennings OBE JP received the prestigious Merit Award to mark his considerable contribution to the Labour Party spanning a period of almost 60 years. Although he lives in Kilbirnie, Jimmy is well known throughout the Garnock Valley and served for two terms as Councillor for Garnock East Ward.  After service in the RAF Jimmy joined the Labour Party around 1946. However, it was in 1958 that he was elected to serve as Councillor on Kilbirnie South Ward under Ayr County Council. He continued to serve when local government reorganisation resulted in the formation of Strathclyde Regional Council and subsequently North Ayrshire Council. He would go on to become Convener of the largest local authority in Europe and was later appointed OBE. Subsequent acknowledgement of his considerable contribution to politics and community service in North Ayrshire was the great honour of being appointed the first Freeman of North Ayrshire and installed as an Honorary Sheriff for South Strathclyde, having served as a Justice of the Peace for many years. Jimmy was chairman of Ayrshire Joint Police Committee and later Strathclyde Police Board and served as chair of the Police Council for the United Kingdom for several years. Locals will be largely unaware that his knowledge of policing issues was considerable at national level and he chaired the negotiation board dealing with police pay and allowances. Few folk will be aware that in the 1960s Jimmy stood as a candidate for Westminster in Perth where he was defeated and was subsequently lost out to David Lambie in the nomination for the Central Ayrshire seat, which David went on to serve with distinction for many years until he retired and the reins handed over to current member, Brian Wilson MP. There was a large gathering of friends and former colleagues at Garnock Labour Social Club last Wednesday when many tributes were paid to Jimmy for his public service ranging over so many years. Above all Jimmy has retained the common touch and is a down-to-earth character. In his leisure time he enjoys watching junior football. When Kilbirnie are away from home Jimmy can be found down Bellsdale way supporting Beith or at Merksworth Park supporting Dalry Thistle. He was originally from Dalry. It was fitting that his daughter Marie made the presentation of the Merit Award and Jimmy was in great form in his light hearted reply, recalling many of the happy and often hilarious days in politics. Everyone will join in wishing Jimmy every happiness in the future when much of his time will be taken up well away from the cut and thrust of politics - looking after his grandchildren, an enjoyable role which he relishes. Congratulations, Jimmy.

WAX WINGS

At Lochwinnoch RSPB Nature Reserve the first waxwing of this winter was seen
on Friday 24th October. In fact this is the first waxwing to be reported
within the central belt of Scotland so far this winter! There have been other early reports of this highly coloured bird over the last few days in the Northern and Western Isles and sightings off the sea at Fife Ness. All this points towards a possible invasion, so please keep alook out for any starling-sized birds scoffing berries from trees which have
an obvious crest, and a yellow tip to their tail. Please phone the reserve with any possible sightings on 01505 842663.

GUIDES

BEITH BOYS CLUB

Beith Juniors Boys Club under 9s had a resounding victory over Kilbirnie Ladeside’s under 10 team in a friendly last Sunday. Craig Elliott and Michael McNaughton each netted two, and with Kilbirnie’s own goal and a goal from a penalty kick, saw the game finish 5 – 1 for the Beith lads. The team on now on the winter break. The tally for the past season shows the Beith lads have won six of their ten league games and this augers well for the future.

PLAYPARK ACTION GROUP

Can you help? Beith Playpark Action Group are on the look out for volunteers to help them achieve their objective of delivering a state-of-the-art play facility for children and young people in Beith Public Park. The group have already made massive strides in their fund raising endeavours and have been successful in organizing a variety of interestingly different fund raising events and accessing a variety of grant sources. They have also had the support of many folk in the town who have taken part in sponsored events such as the recent Glasgow half-marathon.  However, they do need a number of people to help in repetitive ongoing tasks such as photo-copying, gathering and distributing information, typing etc. The time involved is small, but the help given will be invaluable. The Playpark Action Group is made up of a very small number of people who have worked very enthusiastically and effectively over the last couple of years and they really do deserve the help and support of the local community as they continue their fund raising drive. If you think you might be able to spare one hour each week to assist please contact Audrey Rae on 01505-506320 for further information or see the posters in the usual locations in the town.

RANGERS CLUB

Beith Saracen Rangers Supporters Club are running a bus to the game against Kilmarnock at Rugby Park this Sunday (9th November). The bus will leave Kilbirnie at 1.45 pm and Beith at 2.00 pm. All intending to travel must confirm by 9.00 pm on Thursday 6 November with bus stewards. The Christmas draw tickets are now on sale from any committee member. The supporters club are delighted to announce that they are hosting a Rangers Road Show on Friday, 20 February 2004. Bookings are now being taken and tickets can be reserved by contacting David Raeside on 01505-504892 and Jim Reid on 01505-504548. A £5 deposit secures your ticket for this event.

GOLF CLUB

The October medal competition was played over the Beith course last Sunday in conditions which were far from ideal. Despite this there was a good turnout of competitors who enjoyed a first class competition. The winner was John Larid with gross 35 and net 30. Second was Norrie Murphy with a gross 36 and net 30. In third place was Alex Locke who returned at gross 39 and net 32. In fourth place was Billy Whyte with a gross 39 and net 32.

ACCORDIAN CLUB

Beith and District Accordian Club was founded in September 1972 and has been going strong ever since. Monthly meetings are held during the period October – May and are very well supported by locals in the Garnock Valley. Each month a leading Scottish Country Dance Band is normally engaged to entertain. Well known Beithite, Tom ‘Pie’ Irvine, was a founder member of the club and was secretary for the first 19 years and has been president for the past 12 years. Sheila Strachan has been secretary for the past 12 years. John Strachan, Sheila’s husband, has been club pianist and sound expert and organizes the equipment involved in making the club nights a great success. However, due to ill health, John has intimated that he and Sheila will have to give up their part in the running of the club which is based in the Anderson Hotel, Beith and Sheila will retired from club activities at the same time. John has given 31 years of first class service to the Beith Accordian Club. The club will continue to operate until the end of the current season in 2004, but they are now on the lookout for someone to come forward and volunteer to take on the organisational side of the club. Unfortunately, Tommy, Sheila and John now feel that they would be keen to hand the reins of control over to someone younger, so they are on the lookout for a willing volunteer. The likely volunteer would no doubt enjoy Scottish accordian music and have good organisational skills. Anyone who might be interested in taking on this role can find out more about what is involved by contacting Sheila on 01505-863673. It would indeed be sad if the respected Beith Accordian Club had to discontinue activities after May 2004 because of a lack of volunteers to help with practical and administrative duties involved in making club nights so enjoyable for everyone.

Beith Bowling Club have a busy calendar of social evenings to suit all tastes over the winter. The first event brings to Beith a first class comedian, Bert Allan together with singer Billy Kaye with music from the Eagles and Neil Diamond. She took as her theme inequality between the richest and poorest nations of the world. HISTORICAL

Beith Historical Society met in the Eglinton Inn at 8.00 pm on Thursday, 30th October when there was a good turnout of some 35 members members and visitors. The speaker was Elaine MacFarlane from Ardrossan. Elaine is the daughter of the late John McFarlane, a well known and respected man in the town and district. A University lecturer, Elaine spoke on Fighting in the cause of Freedom - Scotland in the Great War. She held the audience captivated as she talked about a variety of aspects of the Great War and the huge number of casualties.  The war coincided with a great economic decline and at local level Roebank silk works in Beith immediately closed and the many cabinet works in the town went on short time as their products were regarded as luxury items and many of the workers were conscripted for military service. During the course of the talk Elaine mentioned that 200 Belgium refugees came to Saltcoats to live.  She also advised that five sons of Mr Malcolm Clark, Woodside Road, Beith, himself a former Private in the Royal Field Artillery, enlisted in the early years of the war.  They were Private Thomas Clark of the 10th Seaforths, who prior to enlistment was employed in a hairdressing establishment in Ardrossan. Private George Clark of 3rd Saforths worked with the Glengarnock Iron and Steel Company Ltd. Driver Malcolm Clark, Jnr, RFA, worked with Messrs Stevenson, Higgins & Co. Private William Clark, 4th RSP was employed as a blacksmith with Mr Alexander Crawford of Beith. Private John Clark, 4th RSF, was a chairmaker with Messrs Stevenson, Higgins and Co. Elaine also read a short two verse poem, entitled Who Would Dare to Falter, written in 1914 by Mr David Weir of Dalry.

Who would dare to falter,

In the darkest hour,

Who would seek to barter

With a foreign power?

Who would stifle conscience.

Say that might should rule?

Who is on the Hun’s side,

 Is there such a fool,

President Allan Richardson thanked Elaine on behalf of the members for a most fascinating talk. The next meeting of Beith Historical Society will be held in the Eglinton Inn at 8.00 pm on Thursday, 27 November when well known Beithite, Anne McCorquodale will speak on Doulton Figures.

TRINITY MENS FELLOWSHIP
President John McGibbon welcomed a good turn out of members, and after a
reading by Harry McMaster, introduced the speaker for the night, Mr Colin Duthie.

Mr Duthie gave a very entertaining, and at times moving account of a journey
across Israel by bicycle, made all the more remarkable for the fact that he
lost his right leg at the age of twenty in a motorcycle accident. Trapped under
a lorry for 90 minutes, and following a spell of 15 months in hospital, he
felt that he had very little left to live for, since all of the things that he
enjoyed were no longer available to him.  After suffering recurring bouts of depression he was challenged by his wife to take part in a 250 mile bike ride across Israel to raise funds for the British Heart Foundation. After obtaining a special three wheeled, hand propelled bicycle from America he trained for eight months before setting off on his trip.  Despite assurances that the weather in April would not be too hot he found himself cycling in 100
degree temperatures, and because of his relatively slow speed no time to rest in the mid-day heat, although he was accompanied by three nurses.  Due to unrest in the area the planned fifty mile ride each day sometimes became 70 miles, and during his journey he had several "adventures" such as speeding down a three mile hill at 45 mph and crashing into a party of German picnickers on the shore, and white water rafting on the Jordan and sailing over a waterfall, both of resulted in his picture appearing in the local newspaper.  Throughout his journey he was always impressed by the humanity of the locals, who although they had very little were always willing to share it with anyone more unfortunate than they were.  He finished by saying that a life without compassion was no existence, and that he had learnt much from his misfortunes.  After a lengthy question and answer session and tea and biscuits, a vote of thanks was proposed by John Smith. Next Monday the talk will be given by Mr Phillip Schreiber, conservation manager for the National Trust.

NORTH AYSHIRE BAND

North Ayrshire Band band will be taking part in a joint concert with Kilbirnie Salvation Army Band in the Salvation Army Hall, Kilbirnie, on Tuesday, 25 November. This concert is interestingly different as both bands will feature the music of Eric Ball, one of the all-time great brass band composers. The centenary of his birth is being celebrated by brass bands all over the world during 2003 and this concert marks the contribution from two local bands in the Garnock Valley. Followers of the band are asked to note that the annual concert of North Ayrshire Band will be held in St Margaret’s Church, Dalry, on Friday 5 December at 7.30 pm. Last Friday evening the band held a ceildh in Beith Community Centre with dancing to the Garry Blair Band. This turned out to be an excellent night which was much enjoyed by all those present. The band continues to meet for rehearsals each Tuesday evening in the Social Wing of Garnock Academy from 7.30 pm until 9.30 pm. DASHER VIDEO

John and Noreen Steele are well known in the Garnock Valley because of the many talks they have given on the Tragedy of HMS Dasher. The converted aircraft carrier sunk in the Firth of Clyde between Ardrossan and Arran on 27 March 1943 with the loss of 379 lives. The enormity of the tragedy was shrouded in war time secrecy and it was only in recent years that many of the relatives got to know what actually happened to members of their family who were on Dasher. Following on the success of their best selling book on the Dasher tragedy, a video appropriately entitled The Tragedy of HMS Dasher has recently been published. The video has a running time of 54 minutes and is narrated by Sean Barrett. The video has been produced as a memorial to all those affected by the tragedy and the finale of the video is a roll call of all those who went down with the ship accompanied by a tribute song written and sung by Dusty Millar of Saltcoats. The video, the Tragedy of HMS Dasher costs £16-95 and is available from: PR Productions, 13 Langley Avenue, Surbiton, Surrey, KT6 6QN Tel. 0210 8399 5709
