NEWS

WAR STORY

During the Second World War well known Beith man, John Marshall of the towns Roebank Road served with the Second Battalion of the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders as PT Instructor from 1940 until 1946. In 1940 the Regiment travelled through Britain and Europe to Germany. Near Eindhoven in the Netherlands, John was billeted for a few weeks with a local very kindly  family who like many in their area, were very short of food because of the war. Having access to army rations John was able to supplement their meagre food supplies and the family were very grateful for this and a special bond developed between John the family which has lasted for 60 years. After the war ended in 1945 the Schalkwijk family parents, until their death in 1948, sent John a Christmas card annually. However, one of their daughters, now 68 years old, continued to be in touch with John. Recently John and his wife Janet spent a short but very emotional stay in Eindhoven with the daughter, Bep and husband Joss, who were delighted to meet John whose links with their parents went back 60 years. John found the visit very special indeed and during his stay he made an emotional visit the nearby British War cemetery at Mierlo where several of his comrades whom he knew well, and who fell in the war in that area, are buried. Again, this was a very poignant reminder of the servicemen who made the supreme sacrifice during the war. The host family were eager to talk about the war experiences were absolutely delighted to have met with John and Janet and reminisced about the happy and sad experiences of yesteryear. During his working life John, now aged 84, was a teacher, farmer, returned again to teaching and eventually retired in 1985. John is an elder at Beith High Church and his main hobbies are bowling, swimming and gardening. However, he does retain special memories of his war experiences and meeting the family who supported him and whom he was also able to help too was a very recent special highlight which he will long remember. A final very fitting result of the visit is that the Schalkwijk family have volunteered to visit the graves of John’s five fallen comrades at Mierlo Cemetery and place flowers on their graves.

BANK ROBBERY

Well, folks, it’s happened yet again. Beith’s Clydesdale Bank was robbed last Friday morning. Such events can be extremely traumatising for staff members involved and in recent years the bank has been robbed on at least three other occasions. The good news is that a man was apparently arrested in connection with the most recent incident. On one of the previous bank robberies the bank-robbing buffoon got off his mark up the street leaving a trail of money in his wake. One elderly local woman, seeing the bolting-baddie and the trail of floating fivers, shouted frantically, as she picked up the windfall: “Hey son, come back, you’ve dropped yur money” Needless to say the fleet-footed felon disappeared into the wild blue yonder, never to be seen again until he, too, was inevitably nabbed by the polis. A silver lining in every cloud, eh!

BEITH JUNIORS

Beith Junior are nothing if not innovative in their fund raising ideas. They will shortly be offering a very unsual competition which has a fabulous £1,000 cash prize and it is called Poop the Scoop! This competition is  not a new concept and in fact has been used in the States as a fundraiser for some time now. It’s a CASH prize competition with no human skill or possible intervention. Tickets will be sold at £2 each or 3 for £5 and there will be a single cash prize of £1,000. Intrigued! Well here is a brief outline of the competition. The tickets will have printed on it a reference number relating to an area of the Bellsdale Stadium playing surface ranging from A1 to Z50.

There is no limit to the amount of tickets that can be purchased by one person but as the tickets will be random and sellers will not have blocks of the pitch to sell no one person should have ownership of a large area thus keeping the competition open to chance more than judgement. On the competition day (date still to be advised, but likely to be during August) an animal of some description will be placed on a starting point on the pitch, this will be decided by drawing from a hat the reference point (e.g. C16), the animal will be placed in the centre of that grid and will then be free to roam wherever. When the animal decides to relieve itself of its ‘poop’ the spot it lands on will be declared the winning grid. An independent judge will be present to ensure proceedings go smoothly and his/her decision will be final. The committee of Beith Juniors hope to tie the day into a BBQ and people who purchase tickets will be invited to join us at the ground to watch the proceedings and receive their prize, if successful. It’s a fun competition with a substantial prize and with a special emphasis on promoting the club and Beith town to a wider audience. So folks, watch this space for more information about Scoop the Poop. Tickets for this fun fund raiser are now available in Bright Sparks. Beith Juniors also have a range of Polo Shirts in Black or White are now available to order in sizes 'S', 'M', 'L' and 'XL' and great value at only £12.00 per shirt. Beanie Hats priced at £6.00, lightweight style compared with the fleece ones sold in the Winter. And finally they also have Baseball Hats, a very popular item and again great value at only £7.00. All items available from Brightsparks or contact any committee member.

Because of the caring shown by the Beith Group in their fundraising efforts, supported by local people, we are able to provide a transport service for all patients in the Garnock Valley to attend hospital for treatment in Ayrshire and Glasgow. Thank you once again to everyone in Beith who has helped achieve this marvellous sum.” Everyone will join in congratulating Bill and Moira and their outstanding group of loyal volunteers for their tremendous fund raising efforts which do so much to help provide a vital transport service for those requiring hospital treatment for cancer. RATS

RATS advise that since the recent planning meeting at Irvine which gave the ‘green light’ to the proposed landfill site at Trearne, as previously reported in the Herald, they confirm that they are fighting on. Some of the committee will shortly be meeting with MSP's at Hollyrood, Edinburgh to put their case, and RATS have also had contact with similar committees at Greengairs and Dalbeattie where residents in these areas are facing similar problems with landfill sites, hence the reason for arranging a meeting with them to learn from each others experiences. As locals will be aware through the columns of the Herald, the Trearne application has been referred to Edinburgh by North Ayrshire Council board members, because the figures of infill material from Ayrshire were revised, the application could be called in by Scottish Ministers for determination. In the meantime RATS ask that as many local people as possible  send in their objection letters to: SEDD Planning, Division , Victoria Quay, Edinburgh, EH2 6QQ. RATS also advise that local support is vital and if anyone requires assistance or want to know more about the campaign, the RATS committee have prepared leaflets and will also have a stall at Gateside Fete on June, 5 and at the Hessilhead Open Day on Sunday  June, 13.

It might be a special achievement; a retiral; extra-special wedding anniversary; a visitor to the town and district, fund raising event or perhaps even the death of someone well known in the district or simply the news and views from your group or organisation to keep them in the public eye. In fact anything which might be considered interesting or newsworthy at local level. When the people of tomorrow want to learn more about the people of today in Beith and district, a primary source of information will be the Herald, so it is important to make sure that a comprehensive news-round appears each week. You can contact your correspondent on 01505-503801 or by e-mail: donaldleesreid@hotmail.com. Items should be in the hands of the correspondent as early as possible and not later than 9.00 pm each Sunday evening to appear in the Herald the following week, provided sufficient space is available.
