Evans, who won a bronze medal in the boys' U/15 high jump.  On Sunday

May, 16 several of the Saturday morning runners successfully completed the

Women's 10K in Glasgow - well done to Morag Boyd, Lorna Fraser, Pamela Gray

and Margaret McNaughton! The Beith Harriers annual races take place on Sunday June, 13.  There are races for children from pre-school age up to U/17 at the public park at 2.00 pm - registration from 1.00 pm at the Community Centre.  These are followed by the Annual 4.2 mile Road Race for adults starting at 3.00 pm.  It would be great to see a few more local runners take part.  Beith Harriers would also welcome help from any members, ex-members, friends etc able to help out with the organising and stewarding of the races.  Anyone interested in competing or helping please contact Margaret on 502863 or Susan on 503254.

ANGLING

Beith St. Inan’s Angling Club trout-takers fished their third competition of the season, the Coachhouse Trophy, on Kirkleegreen Reservoir on Wednesday night in cold and windy conditions.  Despite the weather 17 anglers turned out, and in an improvement on recent competitions, five anglers weighed in 6 fish.  The competition was won by Willie Ashwood with two fish for 4lb 6oz, and second place went to John Haggerty, after an eventful evening with one rainbow weighing 1lb 14oz, the remaining three anglers weighing in brown trout. Willie Ashwood currently heads the club championship with 20 points, from Stewart McNaughton with 10 and John Haggerty on 8.  The next date for the diary is the West Trophy, to be fished on  June, 12.

BEITH JUNIORS

Beith Junior are nothing if not innovative in their fund raising ideas. They will shortly be offering a very unsual competition which has a fabulour £1,000 cash prize and it is called Poop the Scoop! This competition is  not a new concept and in fact has been used in the States as a fundraiser for some time now. It’s a CASH prize competition with no human skill or possible intervention. Tickets will be sold at £2 each or 3 for £5 and there will be a single cash prize of £1,000. Intrigued! Well here is a brief outline of the competition. The tickets will have printed on it a reference number relating to an area of the Bellsdale Stadium playing surface ranging from A1 to Z50.

There is no limit to the amount of tickets that can be purchased by one person but as the tickets will be random and sellers will not have blocks of the pitch to sell no one person should have ownership of a large area thus keeping the competition open to chance more than judgement. On the competition day (date still to be advised, but likely to be during August) an animal of some description will be placed on a starting point on the pitch, this will be decided by drawing from a hat the reference point (e.g. C16), the animal will be placed in the centre of that grid and will then be free to roam wherever. When the animal decides to relieve itself of its ‘poop’ the spot it lands on will be declared the winning grid. An independent judge will be present to ensure proceedings go smoothly and his/her decision will be final. The committee of Beith Juniors hope to tie the day into a BBQ and people who purchase tickets will be invited to join us at the ground to watch the proceedings and receive their prize, if successful. It’s a fun competition with a substantial prize and with a special emphasis on promoting the club and Beith town to a wider audience. So folks, watch this space for more information about Scoop the Poop. Tickets for this fun fund raiser are now available in Bright Sparks. Beith Juniors also have a range of Polo Shirts in Black or White are now available to order in sizes 'S', 'M', 'L' and 'XL' and great value at only £12.00 per shirt. Beanie Hats priced at £6.00, lightweight style compared with the fleece ones sold in the Winter. And finally they also have Baseball Hats, a very popular item and again great value at only £7.00. All items available from Brightsparks or contact any committee member.

ARREST

Inspector Kenny McLachlan, Kilbirnie Police, advises that a 33 year old man was arrested in Mains Road, Beith in the early hours of Sunday May, 16 following a report that a male was in possession of a knife.  Following the allegation the male was taken into police custody and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal. The local top cop also advises that bogus workmen, in short conmen and thieves, are again on the go in Beith. On this occasion the bad guy was pretending to be a plumber. This crime occurred on Thursday May, 13 at 10.00 am. when an elderly woman who lives in the area near the bypass, was the victim of an unscrupulous criminal who entered the her home on the pretext of a water leak in a neighbour's property. The old lady, in her eighties, was then distracted by the conman who asked her to run water.  The lady then found that a large sum of money had been taken from her purse. The suspect at some point had attended at a nearby address around the same time but left on the householder being suspicious. Suspect is described as male, white, 30/50 years, 5'8"-6' with short dark hair, dark clothing and a polite West of Scotland accent.

No mention of a vehicle, although it is likely that one would have been used.  Police This type of crime has been perpetrated in Beith on a regular basis over the last few years. Elderly people can be very vulnerable to con men and caring neighbours are asked to be extra-vigilant and remind older folk about never allowing any stranger into their homes. All the public utlity workers carry identification, but even in such cases older folk should, if in any doubt, keep the person out until a friend or neighbour comes to their assistance.

They have decided to enter again this year. The categories are community business, young people, older people, environment and community life. If any group or organisation has been involved in projects or innovative or interestingly different community activities in Beith and District which relate to the above categories particularly since June 2003 to the present, details of this would be very helpful for the Community Council submission. Contact Donald Reid on 01505-503801 as soon as possible or preferably drop in a brief note of recent activities which fit with the above categories. The closing date for submission of local information is May, 30 to allow a submission to be prepared. In fact anything which might be considered interesting or newsworthy at local level.
